Default Handicapper think tank

If you guys want to be winning gamblers, I suggest you start making rounds to that forum.

Let me be blunt. Math geeks kick ass at sports betting. If you want to win year after year at this, quit your day job, and sleep in every weekday, start reading that forum.

It has really come a long way - there are lots of quality discussions with knowledgeable posters. There's no crappage allowed in there (I'll delete it or move it if it's stupid or off topic) - just concentrated goodness. Every question I've seen posted there has had a quality accurate reply. So if you're sick of losing at sports betting, join the geeks in the Handicapper think tank.

I think some of us non-sharp fellows are a little intimidated to post there, but we do read.

To quit my job of $100,000 a year I need a bankroll of the inverse of 2% which is $5,000,000. I'm not a math geek by any means.

I peruse the Think Tank occasionally. I liked stats in college and all the stuff in those threads is completely w/in my grasp. However, I think I might not be into gambling in the way you have described. I think I just like the action and I don't really care whether I win or lose.

Part of me is interested in working the system through the use of math... I mean I have made my own speed figures (though I know the take outs in pari mutual systems make them virtually unbeatable) and have tinkered with math as applied to horse racing.

All this said, I appreciate that the Think Tank forum is there and when I am ready to take that step. Maybe I will check it out and give it a little more effort...

What a trash is this?

All you need is the math knowledge every 14 year old teenager has.

Everything else is more important than "math geeks"

I look in every now and then. To be honest, I have never found enough to make me a regular.

I get an "Emperor's New Clothes" vibe quite a bit. I'll see some math going on - and people saying, "Wow!" - but I don't get the impression they even understand what they're saying wow about.

I do have some math background and I have seen some wonderful math being discussed in there - without regard to how the theory fits in with actual sportsbook rules and the real placing of bets.

Frankly, there have been a few times where I come away questioning if the "math geeks" gamble at all. Not that there is any shame in that. And there is no reason someone who doesn't gamble can't have information that will make me money.

I could give examples. I don't really want to. I'm glad people are finding it useful.

But the bottom line is, I am always doing effort/impact assessments on how I spend my time, and what I have seen in the Think Talk has not impelled me to devote more time to it.

Maybe I have just been checking at bad moments. Perhaps I will check some more.

Algebra is enough to play small-ball.

If you want to make more than 50k a year, you need probability, statistics and discrete/combinatorial mathematics.

How much do you make betting sports each year, Justin?

Is it your only source of income?

As a "small ball" player, I can´t understand this.

Whether I earn 50,000 a year or not.

But more important, I don´t believe in your theory.

To go further I would say It´s ok when you understand this , "statistics and discrete/combinatorial mathematics", but in my opinion, that´s useless information in the end.

P.S.: Useless in the sense of make money or not.

This is only theoretically stuff.

In other words:
it is not enough to be a maths professor to make 50.000 a year.
You need a lot of other skills (which are much more important than this math skills)

Justin,

I'm going to respectfully disagree that you need that much of a background in mathematics to be successful in this game. I have zero background in math but have been successful wagering on horses for 17 years and have had many many years where i've gone well over the 50k mark that you state. That doesn't mean that math doesn't play a part in what i do as obviously it does. In the end, math is the reason you either win or lose, but as stated i don't believe that the level of math that you state is needed. I will never disrespect the math guys here, simply because i have learned so much from them and have been able to use some of the theories to enhance my own success with the horses as well as improve my own sports handicapping to the point where it's become a nice side income. And to be honest i wish i understood more of it. I have no doubt most of these guys win, but i don't believe it's the only way to win.

17 years of beating the races, Often at over 50k a year. Thats a hell of an accomplishment. A rarity indeed. Worthy of superstar status.

Me neither. People may want to brush up on their reading comprehension skills as well as their maths.

Is it inherently useless or useless to you since you personally are unable to see the advantage in it?

Justin7 was certainly not saying you need to be anywhere near a maths professor.

It isn´t inherently useless.
Maybe it´s because of my broken english you can´t read my post.
But I guess you aren´t a punter, so it´s useless to explain this to you

Nothing to do with your english, I was merely clarifying your point.

How many people have to work as forum moderators as opposed to choose to. And remember that not all of the forum moderators only moderate the forums.

Let me sum this up very easy

Math is only good for scalping and middling and nothing else.

Only way to win at sportsbetting if your playing one side is this.

If you play Okl St next week at +7.5 and line closes at +6 and you can do this the majority of the time you will be a winner or if you take Okl -7.5 and the line closes at -9 or -9.5 you are a winner long term. The hard part though is knowing where the line is going to move and most of the time we bet the worst line or not a good line 50% of the time.

I'm sure there are ways to win at sports gambling without using math.

What I'm constantly amused by, however, is peoples complete unwillingness (or inability perhaps) to learn a few basic concepts that would help them win (or at least lose less). As moonbeam suggests, much of this is literally junior high school level math, yet 99% of forum posters won't or can't learn it. This is how people end up believing things like the quote in my signature line.

A little basic marketing is what it takes to get the think tank BUSTling with excitement, not math skills.

A few pictures of jingling jugs laced into the posts will guarantee a steady flow of visitors.

Just look at how much action the badnina avatar about hers got.
