There was a sports bettor in the Dakotas that was prosecuted for misdemeanor gambling for online sports betting. That's the only one I've heard of though, and this was about 4-5 years ago.

Interesting. Wonder if they had any actual evidence that he was a bookie.

He wasn't a bookie, but I think the tax issues were why he was prosecuted.

The question wasn't about a bookie being busted. Lots of bookies have been busted.

The story that's linked to specifically says that the reason for his prosecution was speculation that he was a bookie...

"Speculations also arose that Trauman was actively taking bets and not only placing them, and this is what motivated the state authorities to target him."

The funny part is that he was caught because he reported his gambling earnings to the IRS. They turned him in.

So what's the lesson here? If you live in a state where gambling is illegal, don't report your earnings? What's the greater risk? I think I'd rather have the misdemeanor "betting over $500" charge than the IRS after me for tax evasion.

Ok, your post followed Justin's. I assumed your query was to his example.

If we want to talk bookies being busted, the list is long.

Yeah, I think it's the same case that daggerkobe and Justin are talking about? Would be interesting to know whether there's any case where there *weren't* allegations of bookmaking..
