I know this thread has probably been covered already but i am looking to get a new TV and was wondering which is best.It seems to me that Samsung is probably the best make ?

Just matters on room. If you have a ton of light stay away from plasma.

I just picked up a SHARP 42" 1080p LCD for about $1100 (after tax) pretty nice...

I prefer the LCD -- the plasma tends to burn in shadows after a few years.

I have a Sony LCD and it has been great -- Samsung is also very good for LCD.

Plasma will heat up your room a lot depending on how big it is. I like my 42 LCD.

As i watch a lot of sports then i have been told to get a plasma,but i am a little concerned about picture burn,surely this won`t happen with a good quality TV?

Listen here, ace, Plasmas dont burn in anymore unless you leave your shit on for 24 hours paused image. Sports are much better on a plasma because it has 480HZ. Going forward with a plasma get a panasonic or pioneer. Best two out.

I have a Panasonic plasma and don't get even a hint of image retention.

Plasma tv's have a limited lifetime, LCD is much longer, it's not know yet when they expire. If a pixel burns out in a plasma tv your screwed, get another tv, in LCD you can replace a section of the screen and sometimes the pixel will fix itself ( has happened to me in both a tv and a big pc monitor ) and LCD will never hurt your eyes in a million years, and to get the best of your tv, get a 42'' + size 1080p with a brigh black screen, you'll thank me later !

another thing, what is built for thousands of hours of use and you never see in plasma ? PC monitors ! there has to be a reason why !

Projected life of current panasonic plasmas is 100,000 hours (at that point their brightness will be half of what it was when it was new).

You stay away from Plasmas because their screens are reflective, it's like a piece of glass. They put anti-reflective coatings on them now; but they don't work great. My Panasonic has like a cross-hatch pattern of glare (because of the coating) if my shades are open in my living room. It is slightly distracting. You should definitely go LCD if you can't control the light in your room.

this is key for me, power options !
If you were to compare the power usage of plasma vs LCD TVs, you would soon find that an LCD panel consumes typically 30% to 40% less power than an equivalent size plasma display, that's huge !

Interesting stuff. The tone of the article linked above suggests Plasma is the best choice for 40 inches and above with respect to response time (really important in constant motion sports), lack of pixel problems, and qualitative viewing (displays blacks better).

For average home use without necessarily being a sports junkie, LCD is probably just as good. I have an LCD HD now but had a Plasma HD previously, and my Plasma was richer quality and better for sports.

Not true. Plasmas have a longer life span. Don't test me ace I know my shit. Trust me. 100,000 hours for plasma, 60k for LCD.

Deuce, there appear to be different versions in the lifetime issue, here's a little sample:

Panasonic: States in new specifications that new plasma TVs and monitors are good to 60,000 to half life.
Sony:Now out of the plasma market. Does not list a figure for LCD lineup.
Samsung: Lists 60,000 hours for plasma lineup.
Pioneer: States 60,000 hours of use in their 2008 models.
Sharp LCD panels: States 60,000 hour life.

So now they all seem to be similar or at least they say, anyway I'm sure none of us will wait to see any of these tv's get burned, we'll get new ones every 5 years or so.

I have to agree that in some cases the plasma looks brighter and the image looks better, but the still image issue ( 7-10 minutes of a still image can cause ghosting effects ) scared me a lot since I use the Pause button a lot when watching movies to go take care of something else and the power issue where LCD consumes up to 40% less really made the difference for me.

Temporary burn-in is different from permanent burn-in.

On my Samsung Plasma, if I had the TV on ESPN2 for 4 hours, if I then put on a "white screen" (image burn cleaning option), I'd immediately see the shadowing of the static images, but I'd then just run the white screen option to drown out the shadowing. Most newer plasmas have the pixel signal shift, white screen cleaning options. Plus, if you watch say an NFL game, there's enough commercials to drown out any sticking. Permanent burn-in is more rare with these newer models.

If you keep the TV off when you sleep, and watch sports, movies etc, you'll be fine. If you're a hardcore gamer though then LCD is probably an easier choice.

With the technology the way it is, like you say, I wouldn't be surprised to see both plasma and lcd kicked out of the market by some brand new state of the art technology.

If you kept your tv on every minute of every day under the 60k hour tv it would burn out in 6.86 years. That's a lot of time. I think it's irrevelant if you are only going to have it on 6-8 hours a day. There will most likely be bigger and better tvs within 15 years.

I was a television salesman once in my life. I know what I am talking about. Nothing will ever be as solid as the tube tv. I have one still that was my grandmothers from 30 years ago. Still works great.
