First - 30k debt doesn't kill anyone. The amount is not beyond reach. When you find a job you should be able to pay it back in 2-3 years.

Some gambling sites include links to organizations that assist problem gamblers. If you are a problem gambler you are sick and this is one of the last places you should be hanging out. Perhaps SBR could include such a link as well.

GL. Just not with gambling. It's not for you. Remember that there is always a way out. As long as you're willing to grow through the experience, you'll be allright.

Choptalk, sorry to hear about your problems, especially the loss of your son. I tried to e-mail some suggestions to you, but your yahoo address came back as 'undeliverable due to no such address existing.' Feel free to PM a valid e-mail address to me.

Don't let the CC companies bully you into payments you cannot meet. Make an offer to pay what you can easily afford each month.

If I were you I would also get advice from a Debt Councillor (We have them in the UK I presume the same applies in the States)

Really sorry to hear about the loss of your son, maybe some grief Counselling sessions might help you to eventually come to terms with this awful event in your life.

I wish you good luck for the future.

Consolidation won't work if you don't have a job.

Call each CC tell them you can't afford the payment as is and see if the will lower the interest rate.

CLOSE all of the accounts and stop the bleeding.

When you get a job consolidate all you debt to pay one bill it will give you peace of mine and help you rebuild your credit and your life.

Bankruptcy laws in the US have changed allot in the past year where you can no longer just get your debt wiped clean, they set-up plans for you to pay back the money over time, it will get the companies of your back

The most helpful thing you can do is get your self to GA today people there can help you and teach you how to get out of debt. There allot of people out there in allot more debt than you. Over time you will get out of debt and things will get better GOOD LUCK

For someone in the situation you describe, everything starts with Gamblers Anonymous. Just focus on that.

sorry to hear about your problem bud.

just not too long ago, i know congress passed some sort of bankruptcy reform. i believe you would have to pay a % of your debt. you might want to consult a lawyer with your problem.

whatever you decide to do good luck

Also sorry to hear about all your problems. Just a question..if he is totally out of money, how can he afford to consult a lawyer? What laws do you have in the USA regarding this?

I do a lot of work in the addictions field. Addicts typically have a million problems when they get to the point of realizing they need help. They are sick physically, mentally, financially, relationship-wise - and more.

The biggest mistake an addict can make is trying to tackle everything at once. It never works, it becomes overwhelming - and it leads straight back to the compulsive behavior. I've seen it a million times.

If an addict is going to have a chance, he needs to pick one simple thing and focus on it. In my experience, it is always the addiction itself that is at the root of everything and needs to come first.

For a guy like CHOPTALK to devote energy to lawyers and debt consolidation and job search and grief counselling is not going to do any good if the addictive behavior is continuing. And the addictive behavior will continue - because it's an addiction. The addiction has to come first.

This guy needs to focus on one thing: getting to a G.A. meeting. That's all.

Some hope to be found here

usually lawyers will give you a free consultation on this type of stuff here in the states.

A few thing come to mind when reading this thread.

I'll say this first as it's important. I'm sorry for the loss of your son and this self-pity is probably a lot to blame for this. My Dad died in 2001 and I sort of know how that can be. Nothing can ever take the place of family. Especially parents and sons. Not wives, not frineds. Parents and kids will love you for no matter what, rather you're ugly, poor,or like to light houses on fire just for fun. I say wives and friends can't replace that because why are these people attracted to you in the first place? Nothing replaces sons, daughters, and parents. Remember that. I make sure I'm closer to my mom more than ever now.

Secondly, your being extremely weak. It's a case like this that goodlatte and his queers make against gambling. He could tell stories like this that ruins what others do. Your being a very weak and self pitified person and you know it.

Do you really want to die? or do you just want these problems top go away? I don't think you want to die. Of course, i say this without knowing you. If you truly wanted to, you'd have more pressing issues than registering at SBR to post this. Not to mention, it's really not that hard to kill yourself.

Like Mudcat says, get to GA. That is step one. Stop gambling, you lose. Thats the reaility of it. What other family do you have around you? And do they know of your troubles? Probably not.

30K in CC debt is hardly a reason to file BK, let alone give up on life. DON'T GET INTO A CCC. I've been in the mortgage business and that completely fuks you. Also, keep in mind the average american househiold has over 20K in debt. So you're not that far from that. But don't compare yourselves to them yet. I find it better to do that once you know they are beneath you.

Get a job? What are you good at? What kind of education and training do you have? What other family do you have around you? How old are you?

I know all of this is easier said than done because you lack two of the qualities needed for this. You have no strength and you have no motivation.

If you sincerely tried for just 6 months, you'd be surprised at how much easier it would be to get your life back on track. You act like you are past the point of no return. Guess what. You're not. You still have alot of options.

What would your son what you do to with your life right now?

Wow. A post from TGO which, aside from offering some very good advice, doesn't mention steroids, black quarterbacks or Babe Ruth.

    Is this a first?

I think you should see a counselor before you even begin to worry about bankrupty or Gambler's Anonymous. You're saying some things here that are much more troubling than the debt and the gambling.

You can't let your son's death lead to more tragedy, I doubt he would want that. You need help with this and it's available at no cost. If you don't know how to get counseling, send me a PM and I'll help you.

once you start increasing your gambling in an attempt to win back money, you'll almost alway start towards a downward spiral. you should never rely on a "gamble" to get through your daily life. if things started to really get out of hand once your son died, then it's not about the money, but something deeper.

gambling addictions are one of the toughest to beat and it will be hard to accept that you're different from everyone else. gambling addiction is an illness, and illnesses can't be overcome with logic alone.

if you really want to stop gambling, you will need to go to a GA meeting. and go regularly. there are people there who still go weekly after 10+ years of recovery. just because the mentality to gambling is always there.

the first thing you need to do is get out of that hole you're in. and it may take 2-3 years as people have stated. but the one thing you can't afford to do is continue gambling. it'll only enlarge the hole you're in or greatly slow your progress.

don't give up. it might take you a few tries, but you can beat this with a little time a lot of help. take it from someone who despises the roulette wheel as much as you do.

This is somebody busting the real Choptalk's balls for starting off poorly in bases.

This guy should go here if he wants to check-out

I'd deffinitly consult an attorney for the debit situation and see a counselor both maybe just to talk to someone and see what following steps need to be taken.

Is this just a joke thread then?

Oh well, i'm sure it applies to a few people that are reading this anyway, so all is not lost.

Yes, it's a joke, what if somebody did something like this and called themselves Fezzik, or Bucsfan or whoever might be in a bad spell at that moment ?

I felt the same way at first but then when asked if he was the same guy at the RX he said no right away....so I don't know. If it's not true then it's being taken too far...if it's true then obviously I hope everything gets itself worked out.

Well if it was a joke or not, I'm positively surprised by the answers! Lots of support and wise help.

I agree, this shows how helpful and caring alot of people
are on SBR. I was surprised myself that so manypeople went
out of there way to help this guy, good job SBR.

And Choptalk, withdrawl everything in your account,
get a job and call a credit specialist that can possibly
work out a plan to where you can payoff your debt
in 3-4 years. 30k is not as much as you think, 30k
isn't what it was 10 years ago. Good Luck Chop!!!
