I just want to mention this now so FIFA can change the rules in time for the World Cup.

Move back the Penalty kick spot. It's too close. Too high a percentage of Penalty kicks result in goals. Right now a penalty kick is just a guessing game for the goalie. Move the spot back 8 feet or so and bring some reflexes and skill into the equation.

So often the infraction that leads to a Penalty kick - whether it's a hand ball or a foul - wasn't even close to preventing a definite goal. The punishment is way out of proportion. It would be like the NFL punishing all holding calls inside mid-field by giving the other team the ball 1st and 10 at the 1 yard line.

It's just not right.

Considering there hasn’t been a change in distance since the (12 yards – 10.97 metres) penalty kick was introduced during the 1891/92 season, I think we might have a spot of trouble getting this approved before this year’s World Cup tournament begins Mudcat, but it IS a good idea.

I’m kind of unsure the beneficial effects an additional 8 feet (or 2.44 meters) to the distance would have for the goalie, as this only affords him an extra split-second of time. The biggest effect though would mean that a lot more skill would be needed by the penalty taker. This (IMHO) would definitely be a good thing for the sport.

I have never been a fan of penalty shoot-outs.

My solution?

During extra-time if there is no further scoring after ten minutes then add another ball onto the pitch.

The excitement would great as TWO simultaneous attcks occur at both ends of the pitch. The TVs could go into spklit-screen mode.

Then we would see the managers earn there corn by their tactics.

After twenty minutes, if there is no further scoring, then the "no foul" rule comes into effect. Just as it sounds ... no free-kicks or fouls given for anything.

Then the phrase that the team "who wants it the most" will win will be actually true for once.

Now, even americans could get into that kind of football surely?

That well and thoroughly trumps my meagre little suggestion. I love it.

Now that you bring it up, I would even be in favor having 2 (or more) balls throughout the entire game. They couldn't implement that rule change soon enough for me.
