Arrow New 100 meter record set

You could time me in the 100 with a sun dial, so I'm easily impressed with speed

DOHA, Qatar (AP) - Olympic champion Justin Gatlin broke the 100-meter world record Friday with a time of 9.76 seconds at the Qatar Grand Prix.

The American sprinter lowered the mark of 9.77 seconds set by Jamaica's Asafa Powell on June 14, 2005, in Athens, Greece. Gatlin won the 100- and 200-meter titles at the world championships in Helsinki, Finland, last August. He said Monday he intended to break the record in Doha.

"It is amazing I did it. It took a lot of discipline and dedication," Gatlin said. "You will see many more performances like this from me in the future."

Gatlin was quick out of the starting blocks, but was even with American teammate Terrence Trammell halfway through the race. He surged into the lead in the final 40 meters. Olusoji Fasuban of Nigeria finished second Friday in 9.84 seconds, with Shawn Crawford of the United States third in 10.08.

Gatlin and Powell will face each other at the Gateshead meet in England on June 11. When Powell set the record last year, he bettered the mark of 9.79 set by Maurice Greene in Athens in June 1999. Tim Montgomery's mark of 9.78, set in Paris in 2002, was wiped off the books when he was suspended for two years based on information uncovered in the BALCO doping scandal.

Gatlin's previous best was the 9.85 he ran in winning the Olympic gold in Athens in 2004. His time was 9.88 when he won the world title last year.

Gatlin, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and a former NCAA 100 and 200 champion at Tennessee, is coached by Trevor Graham - the former coach of Montgomery and Marion Jones. At least six of Graham's athletes have tested positive for banned substances and Graham acknowledged he was the coach who anonymously sent a syringe of THG to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, a key piece of evidence in the BALCO case.

Gatlin never has been linked to steroids, but he received a two-year suspension after testing positive for an amphetamine at the 2001 U.S. junior championships. The drug was contained in prescription medication Gatlin had been taking for 10 years to treat a form of attention deficit disorder.

    Impressive.

You wonder why they don't add a digit to the right of the decimal point, so there is more room for improvement between 9.77 and 9.76. It's not as if the technology isn't available (unlike in the old days).

It's depressing that there are people who can match my 40 time with their 100 time.

    Tell me you are kidding.

I just don't see how people can let themselves go. Not really using you as an example but just in general. No matter how old I get, I will always treat my body like the temple it is. I like looking great.

I couldn't imagine going through life like some people that have 2 chins and are 120 pounds over weight with bitch . But they have a "nice personality.

Hell, they better have that just to get the fat girls.

It was a little bit of hyperbole. Meant to express, "man that guy's fast and I'm not." Relax a little.

I know. I kinda figured that. Thats why I said not using you as an example.

But, I was just making a general statement that is true to a large percentage of this population.

I would be depressed and my self confidence would be low if I looked the way most Americand do.

It's like seeing a girl you messed around with with some ugly dork. It's a complete blow to your ego and you must tell them both they are completely beneath you.

I lived in the US from 1993 until 2004 (Honolulu for 3-years, Los Angeles for the remaining 8) and during that time I noticed the significant 'change in size' of the average American.

I remember reading an article in 'USA Today' which said that in 1994 one in every 250 Americans were considered to be morbidly obese; by 2004 that figure had changed to one in 50!

And you lived in a warm climate and tropical part of the country. Imagine how it is everywhere else. Although there are good looking people everywhere. Of course in LA, you have alot of the alternative freaks that go out of their way getting everything pierced in an effort not to get girls so they can act like they are not trying.

But some people are just plain sick to look at and deserved to be made fun of. If they don't like it, they simply can do something about it.

Take me for example, I'm not naturally fat, but i also naturally do not put on muscle easy. So, I eat foods that do not taste great day in and day out to look good. Vegetables, tuna, oatmeal, protein shakes, chicken breats. You get the point.

Fat people just want to throw their hands up in the air and just blame it on generits. I don't feel sorry for them at all. If they had more discipline and self confidence, they wouldn't be as weak and as pussified as Congress.

I like when I see them eating a large plate of something fatting and balance it out with a diet coke or pepsi. Thats a smart move.

Yes it is, Thank you Willie.

So bearing in mind that it's taken 15-years to drop one tenth of a second from Carl Lewis' mark (9.86 seconds) in Tokyo (1991), do you think we will ever see an athlete break through the 9.7 second barrier?
