Default Machismo versus intelligence - what's your take on this situation?

NHL playoffs. Ottawa/Tampa series tied 1-1. 4 minutes into the third period of game 3, Ottawa are leading by 3. Heated words are exchanged between Chris Neil (Ottawa) and Chris Dingman (Tampa). They "agree" to fight. Dingman drops the gloves but Neil "turtles." Dingman takes a few shots at him but Neil is not fighting back.

With his team down by 3 goals, Dingman gets a 5 minute major for fighting and 2 more for instigating. What was a steep uphill climb for Tampa basically becomes game over.

Ottawa scores on the power play and eventually win 8-4 and go up 2-1 in the series.

So what do you think? Smart play by Neil?

Or is he a coward for breaking a "tough guy code?"

Coward. His team was up by 3 with 16 minutes left in the game?

You two are worse than Hitler.

Chris Neil has the right not to be subject to situations which have the effect of making the workplace intimidating or hostile.

The comment "is he a coward" was made because he was a man and nothing else, if he was a woman the comment would not have been made. Thus his gender is the central issue. In this instance, his gender was degraded.

Shame on you and shame on everyone else here.

Dingman should have his contract voided. He has not only discredited Neil by his actions, but he has discredited cowardly pussymen throughout the world.

Got to back taco up here ... all this 'macho' stuff is plain stupid. They are paid to play hockey ... if they want to fight do it in the car park afterwards when they've finished their job. A "real man" can remain calm and control his agression ... its just dickheads who get all hot and excited about it all.

Nothing looks dumber than ice hockey players 'fighting'.

    taco ---> <----Mudcat

I in fact give Neil full marks for his gambit. He locked up the game for his team. I always value intelligence over macho crap.

I hope when he was done he went up to Dingman in the Penalty Box and went

    neanderthal dude

Funny post Taco. Mudcat, I think it was more a comment on attitudes in other threads than this situation. But hey maybe I am reading too much into it.

I'm sure you're right Lakerfan. But no matter what the situation, I think we can all agree that it is always good to hit taco on the head with a mallet.

Sounds like smart hockey to me.

But what do I know? I'm just a drunk country boy TexMex Only thing we know about ice here in Texas is it goes with our tea in the summer and none of us has a clue how to drive on it.
