    Default Keith Hernandez

this isn't the 1980's anymore. alot of things have changed since then. i don't think he should have been reprimanded over those comments at all though.

NEW YORK (AP) -Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez was reprimanded by the team's television network for ``inappropriate'' remarks during a broadcast about a female member of San Diego's training staff.

The former MVP first baseman said women ``don't belong in the dugout'' when he spotted 33-year-old Kelly Calabrese, the Padres' full-time massage therapist, high-fiving Mike Piazza in the dugout after he hit a home run during New York's 8-1 victory Saturday in San Diego.

After Hernandez found out later in the broadcast that Calabrese was with the Padres training staff, he repeated that she shouldn't have been there. ``I won't say that women belong in the kitchen, but they don't belong in the dugout,'' he said.

Hernandez, a former Mets star, then laughed and said: ``You know I am only teasing. I love you gals out there - always have.''

``Keith Hernandez made inappropriate comments regarding the presence of a female massage therapist of the San Diego Padres who was in the dugout,'' SportsNet New York said in a statement Monday. ``We immediately addressed the issue with Keith and reprimanded him, and he publicly apologized during Sunday's game.''

Hernandez said Sunday that he was sorry if he offended anyone. He also said that baseball's rulebook allowed only the head trainer and assistant trainer in the dugout.

But a Major League Baseball memo previously sent to all clubs said that in addition to the two trainers, one member of the conditioning staff was permitted in the dugout during games. After Hernandez's remarks, MLB called the Padres and verified that, indeed, Calabrese was allowed.

Calabrese said Sunday that she was flabbergasted by Hernandez's comments.

``It's a little shocking but you know what - it happens,'' she said. ``He not only discredited me as a person, but he discredited women.''

Hernandez' comments have been blown well out of proportion in this latest media-generated firestorm. Male or female, the Padres should be blasted for the painty-waists they are for needing a massage therapist in the dugout in the first place.

No matter how hard I try, I can't get worked up about this story from any angle. I'll leave it for greater minds to sort out.

His comments don't bother me that much. He is speaking in part from his own experience. A lot of baseball players just wouldn't want a woman in the locker room. Most are too PC to say it, but one guy saying it off the cuff isn't the end of the world. If he feels that way he shouldn't have backed down and apologized.

There is no way a real person in this country would get offended by that. I still don't see what the big deal is. So, can I now go join a "Womans Only" Gym. Can I form a WET( white entertainment television) Of course not, why I can't I? What is the difference?

There is so much more revserse racism and reverse sexism than anything else in this pussified country.

Blimey, I had to read that story twice since I really didn't understand what on earth the fuss was about. Honestly, anyone who's offended by that should really lock themselves in their house for the rest of their lives - life in general must burst their bloodvessels on a daily basis.

the baseball dugout is a place of work...women are allowed to work in this country. Keith Hernandaz says they shouldn't work in a place where they are legally allowed to work b/c he doesn't like it. What do you think the fuss is all about??? Use your brains taco and great one

Jesus, you're one grumpy little boy today aren't you.

What about lakerfan, Mudcat, OWNED, Willie Bee and bigboydan - should they "use their brains" as well? You seem to be the only one here who has taken great offence at the comments.

Honestly, if you're getting worked up about something as dumb as this then you really should open your eyes and look at the atrocities going on in your country and the world as a whole.

Yeah i am getting worked up about it not b/c of what he said b/c of the hypocrite that Hernandaz. There was a period in time where people of his ethnicity were not allowed in the dugout so he really should be talking about who should be in a dugout or not....the fact is she is a member of the team and not only does should she be there but she has the legal standing to be there...I am sure Hernandaz would be offended if someone said Hispanics shouldn't be in the dugout.

Did you catch the part about her being a massage therapist? She is certainly allowed to work, but she's not working in the dugout. Rob Schnieder is allowed to make crappy B-movies in America, too. Doesn't mean he should be sitting next to Barry Bonds during a Giants game (a week ago).

In addition to being allowed to work, you may have heard that Americans are also granted the right to express their opinions. Legal thoughts or opinions are not limited to those that meet the standards of Academia or the Hackey-Sack crowd.

As I endured the BS liberal arts classes required for all majors, I was subjected to plenty of teachers who expressed opinions that were ill-founded or I didn't agree with. I don't suppose that you would have the school meet my demands to have them fired for such transgressions, would you?

great Winston...thanks for that meaningless rant....all you loony conservatives are alike. Her title is of little importance...the fact remains she has a right to be in the dugout and should not be called out b/c of her gender. I am sure KH would not have said anything had she been a man...her presence was called out b/c she was a woman. That's called gender discrimination.

i have no problems with his comments........whatever happened to freedom of speech, his comments in no way hurt this girl physically and i doubt mentally.....geesh.., man was just stating his opinion, and as a former ball player i think he knows more about what goes on in a dugout than any of us.

I think she should be allowed in the dugout as well as in the showers after the game.

I'm sure if the truth came out, she's probably blown half the team, but as soon as one of them calls her a skank, she'll cry sexual harassmant and walk away with 1.3 million.

Actually nice to see you sticking up for the little chick in this instance, BuddyBear.

But what puzzles me is that in another post today, you posted "Taco you are a f\*g". I'm assuming that you meant the derogatory term for someone who is homosexual. So we're not allowed to have any "gender discrimination" in the world of BuddyBear but you're more than happy to infer that someone is homosexual and use it as an insult against them.

Hmmm, that's sounds a bit like some kind of discrimination, doesn't it? If you're going be the political correctness element of the forum then can you at least try to be consistent?

what a suprise not only is IMGV the SBR resident racist, anti-semitic square he is also a sexist....

    let's review the facts....

    1. She is a woman

    2. She has a legal right not to be in the dugout according to MLB

    3. Hernandaz said she should not be in the dugout b/c she is a woman not b/c of her position

    4. Hernandaz has a short memory....he is hispanic....there was a period in MLB where Hispanics weren't allowed in dugouts...

    5. Hernandaz is a moron b/c he criticized her for being a woman...both of them work for NYM organization, he is creating a hostile work enviroment by those statements. If I was that girl, I would find a good lawyer and sue the Mets for tolerating such a work enviroment and get some financial compensation for such things. She's within her legal rights

What question? I'm not following every thread on the board and you're diverting the issue.

And I really wouldn't go around accusing others of being sexist when you've been openly homophobic on the boards today. Or can you give another reason why you insulted someone by using a derogatory term for someone who is homosexual?

Taco I think there is a bit of a miscommunication between us. A f\*g in the colloquial sense is derogatory i agree but a f\*g has multiple meanings and the meaning I was refering to f\*g as a "servant of another student at a British public school." Since I have a very broad vocab sometimes i drop words with multiple meanings...lots of times i forget the type of people i am talking with....most of whom have remedial vocabs . I apologize for the miscommunication.

if you want to accuse of homophobic claims check out this thread and it should clear things up... Oh shit, the dam has broken in womans hoops!

IMGV no big deal to be a racist...it's understandable. in fact, there are a lot of theories out there that claim that everyone has some racists beliefs some just more pronounced than others. Let me guess you have friends of different races. Don't worry about it pal...just get back to capping and doing what you do best making useless posts with your picks!

that's not the issue....the issue is this woman had legal access to where she was. Now she is in a hostile work enviroment, has been embarrassed by another member of the organization, and her credibility has been challenged. You guys are exonerating Hernandaz when you should be condemning what he said.

yeah okay Taco....think what every you want to think. I am really sure a liberal guy like me holds a lot of homophobic attitudes. I would certainly fit in a category of a guy who is homphobic since i live in one of the most gay cities in America, have a high level of education, and am part of a age demographic that is receptive to gay rights...yep, you are right but i am certainly homophobic even after reading that thread you reached that conclusion. good job Taco.

If her feelings are truly hurt in this matter, then she's proven right there she shouldn't be in this situation. She's simply not strong enough. maybe she should have been at home fixing her husband dinner. Trust me, if I was in Keith's spot, it would have been alot worse for the media. They'd have a field day with what I'd say.

Why do you have to be such a damn feminist though? Do you think being "sensitive" actually gets you pussy? It doesn't, being good-looking and haveing a nice body do. I could teach you so much.

You probably agree with the WNBA and think they are actual athletes right? Girl golfers should play on the PGA tour, right?

I'm all for letting girls do that, but no special privlegdes. If they want to be professional player or golfers, play with the men in the NBA,qualify for PGA events, bot get some special exemption for being a girl.

It's funny, they want to be treated fairly, but they are the first to take special handouts like that and think that they deserve this.
