Top Ten New England Patriots Excuses
Some of you may have already seen this on the Late Show with David Letterman.
10. What? It's best-of-seven
9. Too much pre-game chowder
8. Since when is that dude allowed to catch a ball with his head?!
7. Terrified by that Fox football robot
6. Everything was fine til' Dr. Phil decided to straighten us out
5. Should have campaigned harder in Florida
4. Entire team stayed up late that night before watching Hannah Montana concert movie
3. Exhausted after spending hours consoling a weepy Terrell Owens
2. Thought game was supposed to be played on Super Tuesday
1. Airline lost our 'roids
Excuses that didn't make the cut:
1. Spycam ran out of batteries
2. Four words: bad room service paella
3. How were we supposed to know the Super Bowl was this Sunday?
4. O.J. stole all our equipment
5. Were devastated by Dennis Kucinich's withdrawal from presidential race
6. Mistakenly planned for a rally in the fifth quarter
7. Wanted to save our best for the Pro Bowl
8. We'll bounce back next week
9. Giants players kept pushing

Has to be the greatest choke in the history of professional sports. Far surpasses the Yankees/Red Sox series back when Bos won the first one of the modern era.

Totally disagree. Patriots didn't choke. They got outplayed by a much more physical team that wanted the win more. Anything can happen in one game. Red Sox overcoming a 0-3 deficit was a much more shocking upset.

Indeed, they were the better team by far on the day. I never understood the "wanted the win more" argument - I'm sure that every player wanted to win the game for their side, just so happened that the Patriots were outplayed on the day.

Can't agree, guys, but respect your opinions. The patriots had a chance to do what had never been done before, go 19-0. The Yankees choked, yes, but it would have been just another of many pennants for them had they won. The Patriots will forever have an asterisk next to their name now.

So, if the '72 Dolphins had lost in the Super Bowl, a game in which they were an underdog, would that have classified as a choke in your book?

Yep. I remember that series, and I barely watch baseball. That year my roommate at the time was a huge Yankees fan. I happened to sit in the living room with him for game 4. He was actually rooting for the Red Sox! He felt sorry for them. Plus, he wanted to see the series extended a couple games so he could watch his beloved Yankees a couple more times. Then game 5 came, and we watched that, him becoming increasingly irritated. By game 6, he wouldn't even watch anymore. lmao. I will never forget watching the guy just emotionally crumble over the course of that week.
As for the Patriots, I think they can blame themselves. I think they became so tied up with Brady & Moss getting those NFL records during the regular season, that they ignored developing the running game later in the season. It didn't really hit them until the Super Bowl, but I don't think they had enough experience with the running game to diagnose and deal with how the Giants were shutting down the running game. Believe it or not, the Giants were forcing them to pass, and made the Pats one dimensional! Genius, and it worked.
