Default Mike Lupica: Giants join New York sports immortality

Giants join New York sports immortality

Monday, Feb 4, 2008 6:53 am EST

New York Daily News columnist Mike Lupica said the Super Bowl-winning drive engineered by Eli Manning put this New York Giants team on par with the greatest sports team in the history of the Big Apple.

Lupica wrote: "Joe Namath shocked the world once for the Jets. Eli Manning did the same Sunday. Only he had a better game against the Patriots than Namath had in Super Bowl III, and against one of the best teams to ever play. Even after Tom Brady hit Randy Moss and got the lead back near the end, it didn't matter. Wasn't his day. It was Eli's day and his time to make history for the Giants, on the best day the Giants have ever had.

"There will be other teams in New York, because there always are. There is always another team. This team goes with Namath's Jets now and the '69 Mets and Willis Reed, with anything the city has ever seen or will ever see. Never a bigger day than this, never a better Super Bowl than this.''

Lupica is such an arrogant, conceited ass. The man suffers from Napoleonic Syndrome like he's got a corner on that market. Can't stand the little turd, but then, I guess that's already obvious.

There was just a little bit of luck, too, in those 3rd-down conversions during that drive. I credit Manning for escaping the critical sack and for nice touch on the TD. I credit Tyree for bringing in the hand of god on a drive-sustaining, acrobatic catch.

Lupica is a total slapper. You're right about the Napoleanic thing - I'm not even 6 foot and he makes me fell like Shaq. I used to see him at Shea all the time - he's a complete wiener boy.

I've had the pleasure -- misfortune in some cases -- of meeting quite a few sports scribes over the years. The industry has changed so much since the early 90s, and it seems the attitudes of the sportswriters has gone just as glitzy as the times.

Most of the writers I've met were or are with Texas papers. I swear, Skip Clueless, er, Bayless wears makeup now even when he's not on the air. Either that or they've used a very shiny bondo material for all of the plastic surgery he's had.

Growing up, Mickey Herskowitz was a writer I idolized as a kid. When I finally met him -- his son dated my sister briefly -- it took me half an hour to get over just how short he was. But his Letters from Lefty that he wrote way back in the early 60s still rates high with me.

A few Astros beat writers over the years that I met and corresponded with were great, Ivy McLemore and Chris Haft, both of the now-defunct Houston Post. Last I heard, Haft was with MLB.com and up in Seattle. McLemore was one of the official scorekeepers they used (maybe still use) for Astros home games.

One guy on the national scene that I met and was surprised at how personable he seemed was Bob Ryan. Ran into him back in 1999 at what was the last series for the Red Sox at old Tiger Stadium. He was a bit loud and obnoxious in some ways, and he definitely understood he was something of a celebrity. But he was still easy to converse with and just talk baseball.

You really can't describe ML any better than that. Well done, Willie.
