Default Jets to make a run at Asante Samuel

Media day news and notes

Sitting with Vacchiano at a hotel near the University of Phoenix Stadium (which looks like a giant, aluminum-foil Jiffy Pop), and I have to say, I’m a little intimidated. Vacchiano has been a blogging machine this week, and I just can’t keep up. But I’ll give it the ‘ol college try.

Today was media at the Pop, an event that can best be described as part press conference, part carnival. Let’s see: Tom Brady received a marriage proposal from a Mexican TV reporter dressed in a wedding grown; Randy Moss talked about having a big game in the Super Bowl (beware, Giants); talking heads like Chris Berman strutted around like they owned the place; some guy was staging a puppet show; and scantily-clad women paraded around the event, acting like reporters. Yeah, right.

Youngmisuk was all over it, recording every detail for his blog.

I did hear a piece of juicy info regarding Pats CB Asante Samuel, who will become a free agent after the season. From what I heard, the Jets are planning to make a serious run at the talented corner. As you probably know, the Patriots can’t use the franchise tag on Samuel, per an agreement with the team before he signed a one-year deal. That means he will hit the open market - unless the Pats can re-sign him to a long-term deal before March. Can you imagine a Samuel-Darrelle Revis cornerback tandem for the Jets?

Narrowly averted a disaster today. Faith, a waitress carrying a tray of beverages, dropped everything on our table as Youngmisuk, Vacchiano and I were banging out our stories on deadline. The splash came oh-so-close to my laptop. Whew! My Patriots’ media guide, however, didn’t fare as well. Let’s just say that Randy Moss, in my book, is soaked.

The Patriots seem really loose this week, even Belichick, who showed up for today’s session in sandals. He looked like he was ready for Nantucket. Of course, there was no practice today, so there was kind of a relaxed mood. Belichick has been known to lighten up before a big game. Six years ago, when the Patriots played the Rams in the Super Bowl, I spotted Belichick at Pat O’Brien’s early in the week, kicking back with a beverage.

If the coach is loose, the team is loose.

That doesn’t bode well for the Giants.

Good for the Jets, I guess some of these teams haven't learned that these monster contracts hurt them more in the long run. Samuels is looking for the motherload, good luck to the team that spends it.

Jets need more than him. Personally I'd rather play for a winning team than just for money.
