Default Spread Offense

well the spread offense wasn't supposed to work in the nfl but with the top two offenses in the league (gb and ne) running almost half their plays outta shotgun spread formations and more and more teams running a lot of shotgun plays it looks like the nfl is following college footballs trend of moving to the spread...what do you guys think?

They've really passed out of that for a long time. June Jones at the Falcons ran the run and shoot and Kevin Gilbride did it in Houston. It is the option aspect that you won't see in the NFL. The zone read option out of the spread would get your QB killed.

The "spread" offense is hardly something new and i dont think NFL teams running the shotgun = the spread offense. The broncos were putting elway in the shotgun most plays 20 years ago.

the run and shoot was all about passing the ball as often as possible as well as calling plays at the line and looking for possible advantages...the spread puts more emphasis on keeping a defenses linebackers on the sideline by playing 4 (or 5) wrs, it's not worried so much about audibles at the line or passing 3 out of every 4 downs. also, if you have a running qb in the spread it's twice as leathal in that the qb no longer is odd man out on running plays...coming out of the shotgun he can run it himself and utilize the hb (if there is one) as a lead-blocker. this is beneficial in that a normal running play is 10 on 11 since the qb hands off and is out of the play after that. but as we've seen this yr especially even without a running threat at qb the spread offense can be a tough customer for nfl defenses if run by the right personel...i realize the shotgun has been around for years in the nfl but it's never been used along with 4 wrs as a teams base offense...with the success of ne and gb this yr i feel like this is the next trend we're gonna see in the league.
