Default Broncos' Darrent Williams Is Shot Dead

By ARNIE STAPLETON, AP Sports Writer

DENVER - Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning, police said.

Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. Mountain Time from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed.

Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization.

"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.

Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.

After watching this on ESPN it seems another case of mistaken identity. Being at the wrong place at the wrong time. This is a horrible tragedy and should never had happened.

He was 24 years old. He was out on New years Eve just like everyone else in Denver. He was blocks from the Pepsi Center in the middle of LoDo. Somebody pulled up next to his Limo and sprayed it with bullets at 2AM. Same time everybody else was leaving. Can't really file this under why was he at the club, IMO. Just plain senseless.

It's a shame when someone is shot and killed outside a nightclub, we question the victims decision to be there in the first place. Last time I checked, having a fun time at ANY hour is not against the law.

Could be gambling related. Back in 1994 a player from Columbia's soccer team was killed shortly after they were eliminated from the World Cup. There was no way in the world that Columbia should have lost to the USA, just like there was no way in the world that Denver would lose at home to the already eliminated 49-ers.

R.I.P. Darrent Williams. Very sad news.

My guess Dan, is he was still out on the New Years celerbration. So you really cant fault him on that. Maybe any other night, but not New Years.

This is a sad tragedy for his family and teammates.

But remember nothing good happens after 2am. Better to celebrate at home, usually safer.

On ESPN they were talking to a good friend of his,Tatum Bell and he said he heard there was an altercation inside the nightclub that Williams was NOT involved in and they must have gotten his limo confused with someone else.......sad story to say the least

what they are saying on the local radiostations is that Darrent and others were at Kenyon Martin's birthday party. There were 14 people in the limo including Javon Walker. Someone in the limo got into a verbal altercation (not Darrent) as they were leaving the party. These suspects evidently pursued the Limo and sprayed it with bullets. Complete crap shoot as to who got hit and who didn't. Darrent was struck in the neck and died almost instantly. There is absolutely no respect for life anymore. I hope they find the cowards and lynch them...

I doubt if this was a 100% accidental shooting.
