Unhappy Steelers discuss Roethlisberger deal with Raiders; Rams

The Pittsburgh Steelers have stepped up their efforts to trade two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, but the Oakland Raiders might be the only real option.
The Steelers were rebuffed by the St. Louis Rams over the weekend, but a league source said Wednesday that they also have contacted the Raiders, who need a veteran quarterback and tried to land Donovan McNabb before the Philadelphia Eagles traded him to the Washington Redskins earlier this month.

    HQ video delivered by Akamai
The Steelers prepared for Roethlisberger's suspension Tuesday by acquiring quarterback Byron Leftwich from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a seventh-round pick (225th overall). Leftwich was Roethlisberger's backup during the Steelers' 2008 Super Bowl championship season and could be a fill-in starter.
Leftwich reported to the Steelers on Wednesday, and the team extended his contract through 2011, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
The Steelers also have longtime backup Charlie Batch and third-year pro Dennis Dixon under contract at quarterback. Batch has been injured each of the past two seasons. Dixon has started only one NFL game, but he likely would compete with Leftwich in training camp to be the early season starter.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The Raiders have a history of taking on troubled players such as Roethlisberger, who received a six-game suspension Wednesday for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy. Also, Roethlisberger's contract isn't hefty and would be easy to absorb in a trade.
The Steelers had a brief conversation with the Rams, according to a league source, but they weren't interested in acquiring Roethlisberger. The Steelers wanted to send Roethlisberger to the Rams as part of a package to move up to No. 1 overall in this week's draft and select Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford.
That could make the Raiders the only fit. The Steelers are open to packaging Roethlisberger and the No. 18 pick to move up in the draft. The Raiders own the No. 8 selection.
Steelers president Art Rooney II declined to comment about any possibility of trading Roethlisberger.
"As we've said before, we really can't answer questions about trades, especially this time of year," Rooney said during a conference call. "We go into every draft with the idea to do anythying we can to make our team a better football team. We just have to stick with that and not discuss trades in advance."
Despite Roethlisberger's issues, the Steelers want decent value in return for the quarterback. But given the six-game suspension and the limited interest in Roethlisberger, team sources view a deal as extremely remote, if not impossible.
The Buffalo Bills also pick in the top 10 and need a quarterback, but they don't appear interested in Roethlisberger at this time. Doug Whaley, a former executive in Pittsburgh, moved to Buffalo this offseason to work with general manager Buddy Nix, but the Steelers don't expect him to recommend Roethlisberger to his new team because he would harbor some of the same reservations that they do.
The Cleveland Browns have the No. 7 pick and lack a long-term solution at quarterback, but the Steelers wouldn't trade Roethlisberger to an AFC North rival, according to a team source. That also was the Steelers' position with wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who was dealt to the New York Jets earlier this month.

First, Terry Bradsahw was 10 times the QB that Big Ben is. Second, Big Ben is a mental midget. He has big time mental and emotional problems. Guys like him do not last real long in the NFL. He is mentally damaged goods.

How many Super Bowls did the Steelers win after Bradshaw before Ben?

    Yeah, that's what I thought...

You don't trade away a franchise QB in the prime of his career.

As someone said earlier in this thread, franchise QB's do not grow on trees. The Steelers have one. They better hold on to him...

The Steelers actually won in 2008 in spite of Big Ben who was not very good for most of that year. However, I do agree that trading a 2x Super Bowl winner in the prime of his career would be a mistake. As a Raider fan though, I wouldn't exactly be upset if he made his way to Oakland.

I have yet to be impressed by Rothlezlusaqberger. He's always seemed like a mediocre QB on a team not built around needing a perfect QB. I could think of at least 5 who are better than him off the top of my head. The Raiders could use Ben, they could use anything. But if I were the Steelers would I take a top 10 pick for a QB who won't even be playing half the year, has been vastly overrated, and is already over the hill in his football career? Yes I would.

For everyone crying wolf for Ben; yeah sure, you don't trade a franchise QB --- but when you ARE a franchise QB then you'd better act like one.

This idiot is martyring his own career with motorcycles and women. I wouldn't blame the Rooney's for being fed up with him when he can't stay out of trouble in the offseason. How else do you get the point across that he's not immune to consequences?

If Big Ben went to Oakland it would be a lot of trouble for that division.

Big Ben will never win another Super Bowl. Count on that. If he goes to Oakland, the ONLY team that is seriously considering him, he will be mired in the depths of Bandini Mountain for years. My guess is that Big Ben stays where he is because no team other than Oakland wants him, or is willing to give up anything of value, like a #1 pick this year and more, to get him.

Ben to Oakland for 8th pick. then Pitt can get Clausen.

If Pittsburgh gets a Top 10 pick for him, it's the best trade in the history of the NFL. Every team knows they are in desperation mode to get rid of him, so they should get a bargain if they play it right. Raiders are stupid though, so I could see it.

would it be better than what Denver got for Cutler when they were in desperation mode?

Clauson is worthless compared to Ben, there hasn't been a QB Ben's quality in the draft since he himself was Drafted

Dan Lefevour would be just as good to give a shot but truth is Steelers will never be able to replace Ben unless a miracle happens a Good QB comes around once in a decade and you have to be lucky enough to be in the position to draft him

It probably will not because Pitt is asking for the Raiders 1st pick plus Asomugha, and the Raiders are willing to do that, if Pitt throws in their first round pick in addition to Big Ben. That is how far Big Ben's stock has dropped.

Big Ben was never that good of a QB to begin with. He did nothing in the first Superbowl win. He certainly is nowheres near a Top 5 QB in the NFL. I'll take both Mannings, Rivers, Brees, Rogers, Romo, Palmer, and Brady over this guy any day. I would even take Jay Cutler over this guy. For one season, I would take Favre over him.

Big Daddy your team is a perfect example The Bears have never had a good QB in my life time and the Steelers only had Bradshaw before Ben but it is hard to gauge even Bradshaw because practically his whole team was inducted into the hall of fame
