Default NFL Considering OT Rule Change

Considering giving the opposing team one possession if the team that wins the coin toss kicks a field goal on its first drive. It would still be sudden death if the receiving team scores a touchdown.

I think I like it, definitely an improvement.

They should just extend the time to 10 minutes, play it like a regular quarter.

I like this because right now the winners are just being decided by a coin toss.

He means play a 10-minute quarter without sudden death

Yeah that's what I mean, like in the NBA you get 5 minutes.

If its like a regular quarter its 15 not 10

  14. #14

I mean play it like a regular quarter, where you just go back and forth. Which means no sudden death like LT put it. Time wise 15 might be a bit too long.

what not play some fu(king defense if you can't pick heads or tails correctly

At least the NFL is talking about it. That's all I ask.

Because playing to get in field goal range isn't that hard for many NFL teams.

i agree with Shorty here, and not just because he's my friend. just because a team loses the coin toss, it doesn't mean they should be so crappy on special teams and defense that they let a team get into FG range. there is something novel about the way it's run in the NFL compared to college. college gms get crazy outta hand w/all the possessions starting at the 25 yd line of the opponent when it's like a 42 yd FG even if you don't gain a single yd! that's lame

NFL, please keep OT the way it is, which is 15 mins of sudden death OT

If you lost the Superbowl final the season before, you should not be allowed to use any field goals at all whole next season.

    Very well stated hoops!

I know I'm in the minority, but I hate the college and high school overtime format.

I will always be in favor of sudden death to determine the outcome of games...

Leave the shit alone!!! All sports are becoming pussy games even hockey. I blame ESPN and their sissification agenda.

I actually hope they change it. It would do away with that lucky coin toss. I don't know what the percentages are but I would think, they favor the coin toss winner. At least both teams would get a try not just one in many cases. You don't always see the best team win the way they have it.

The best teams have the better defenses.

    I have a better idea:

    Field Goal Shootout!

    Like SO in hockey..

Winner of the coin toss has won 60% of the games since 2000. Only 30% of all OT games since then have been won on the first drive.

I don't see a problem in it at all.

    Its just a perceived advantage.

giving each team a possession doesnt resolve the "unfair" coin flip to get the ball first though.. and we are back to square one after each team has a possession statistically= advantage to team with ball first

one alternative option to the coin flip is to give the ball to the team gaining the most net total offensive yardage in regulation. This way the right to get the ball first has been earned

Dislike. Bad for gambling as it changes around the push percentages.

I'm not sure I like that proposed rule change. I like the fact that if you lose the coin toss you have to play some tough defense to be able to win the game. If you can't stop the offense, you'll lose the game. It puts an emphasis on defense, which I think is good in a league where offense gets that much more attention

I think this could work. Field Goal kickers going at it in overtime until one of them eventually messes up.

Maybe the Overtime might be too long with this rule.

Patriots vs Broncos game and the Vikings vs Saints game last season probably needed this new rule.
