Default Steelers take 'common sense' approach

    Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- The NFL may not have a salary cap this season. The Pittsburgh Steelers will.
The Steelers, one of the league's most popular and successful franchises, plan to follow a self-imposed cap in 2010 and won't take advantage of the lack of a collective bargaining agreement to add more quality free agents than usual.
Director of football operations Kevin Colbert acknowledged the Steelers could be at a competitive disadvantage, especially if big-revenue teams decide to spend freely.

"We will operate as we always have. We will operate as if we have a cap," Colbert said Friday. "You don't know what you're going to be dealing with. First of all, no one's been in an uncapped year since 1993, so it's a whole different era and no one knows how this will play out. We don't know, if there is a new [labor] deal at any point, what the new rules are going to be."
The Steelers also "don't want to have to do something to undo what you did" should the next labor contract contain cap-like restrictions, Colbert said.
Unless a new labor deal is reached by this fall, NFL teams will be free to spend any amount they want on salaries without restrictions for the first time since Steelers owner Dan Rooney played a major role in designing the cap system used from 1994 to 2009.
Last season, the cap was $128 million and the floor was $111 million, meaning every team had to spend at least that amount. The Steelers will calculate what the cap would have been this upcoming season and then spend roughly that amount.
"We're doing a lot of guesswork here," Colbert said. "It's not a hard and fast invisible cap, but more just the approach -- things that make sense within your own team dynamics."
The Steelers don't believe this will be an especially attractive free-agent pool, but that didn't enter into their thinking, Colbert said.
"It's a common sense way to approach things," he said.

After missing the playoffs by going 9-7 a season after winning the Super Bowl, the Steelers need depth at every position except quarterback, Colbert said in his first interview since the season ended. Colbert said they aren't putting a priority on any area.
With most of their top players under contract, the Steelers theoretically could begin next season with largely the same team that lost five in a row late in the season. Colbert hinted that won't happen.
"I think if you enter the season with the same group you ended the season with, you might expect the same results because we're a 9-7 team at this point," Colbert said.
Nose tackle Casey Hampton recently said he will be unhappy if the Steelers prevent him from becoming a free agent by tagging him as their franchise player at a cost of about $7 million, or approximately what they paid him last season.
The Steelers prefer to sign players to multiyear contracts, but Colbert said keeping a player for a single season can be a logical way of doing business. Hampton will be 33 in September and has had weight problems.
"Our stance on a tag, any tag, is we don't like to use them. However we're never going to say we're not going to use something that is collectively bargained," Colbert said.
Colbert, largely responsible for assembling the Steelers teams that won the Super Bowl during the 2005 and 2008 seasons, is unsigned past this season. The Steelers generally prefer to sign a key figure before he enters a contract year, but Colbert said his situation is a low priority.
If former Steelers coach Bill Cowher returns as a head coach elsewhere, it is believed he wants Colbert to be the general manager.
"Anything to do with my personal status, I wouldn't talk about at this point or at any point. That's really not for me to discuss," Colbert said. "I'm totally happy in my position, at this point."

The Steelers finished the year strong and should be in prime position to be a top team next year.

The Steelers have never been a free spending team, yet they have won 2 Superbowls recently. If they can stay healthy (and that is a HUGE IF), they should be in the running again.

there is very little correlation with spending high amounts of money and winning in the nfl. if anything there is a negative correlation. you don't win in the nfl by signing expensive free agents. You do it by drafting well year after year. the steelers are one of the best at that

I would say they're the best organization in football. Saying they're the best in professional sports is going a little too far though.

They treat their players like family Just because they wont pay the high cost of a good player They will bing in a youngster to take that players place and make him just as good or even better Pitts a boot camp for the NFL They wont bow down to a player if he wants to walk he walks as we seen through the years and then the other team found out it wasnt the player its was the pittsburgh steeler team should I go throw the names of player and teams that found that out Well here one neil O donald and the Jets They found out he wasnt a real QB

Yep. Unfortunately he hasn't learned his lesson.

This year's success was mainly due to the Dallas defensive front being the best they've ever been. That architecture has Parcell's fingerprints all over it. This is the heart of the team. They probably have a good window of 2 or 3 years with these guys playing at or above this level but Jerry doesn't know how to replace talent with talent and this team will eventually fade back into the perennial 5-11 team that they had before Parcells got there. I'm not even saying that Parcells is the greatest personnel genius of all time, but he knows how to build a team right.

So, yeah, the Cowboys should be on the radar for a while as long as they retain their core of solid players. But eventually Jerry will keep collecting enough bad character guys and this team will collapse under their weight. Uncapped free agency will probably bring this demise sooner than later if Jerry has free reign to buy all those shiny toys and spoil his team.

Ever heard of the Yankees and Lakers. Pitt didnt win anything for 30 years than didnt win anything for 20 years after their superbowl run. Squeelers fans have short memories or maybe they are just not that bright.

Steelers run their team like a business. They don't overpay like some of the other owners. Look at Randle El, Nate Washingon, Porter's contracts. They were way overpaid by teams stretching to fill their holes.

So what happen to your so called greatest QB and team did lately This was about over paying playing in a no cap year like the colts are going to do with there OVERRATED QB

Steelers signed Casey Hampton to a 3yr deal for $21M reported by ESPN today. Not a bad deal for the Steelers. Hampton will be a good player for the whole term.

signing Hampton was a terrible mistake. 3 yrs at $7mil/yr for a 33 yr old fat fukk? Woodson was the only veteran they dropped that did anything later on. i was sure Hampton would be gone this year and Pitt would save $$$ to spend elsewhere, like on an offensive line that can't pass block. so their plan going forward is to stick with an old ass defensive line, over pay them and hope for the best? Hampton will miss some games this year, no doubt. Smith is sick, but over 30. Kiesel, over 30. their D-line is old as fukk.

write this down: Steelers will miss the playoffs again.

This will be interesting to see what kind of deal Manning will get. Granted, he deserves top pay, but good grief. How much money can a team stick into one position? If it was bad for the Colts before, it's only going to get worse. We'll be seeing Manning plus a squad of players playing for the league minimum. lmao

Polian might be smarter to play a little hard ball with Manning and let him go out and seek a deal with another team. Nobody can pay him anyway. Besides, this has gotta be Manning's last deal because he's on the back end of his career. Why pay $100 million signing bonus for a guy that might retire in a few years?

Agreed, I mean I don't think they're super bowl contenders or anything, but I definitely think they'll be in the playoffs this year.

The AFC North has gotten a lot tougher. I think the Steelers will be fighting for a wild card with Jets/Pats/Fins, Titans, and Houston.

With their O-line decaying, and lacking a strong running game, they are no longer a top tier team. Or did I miss a really big signing?

Mike Tomlin is Barry Switzer without a college resume
He lost to Oakland, Browns, KC
Tomlin is overrated and is the ain reason this team showed up for only 4 games, steelers records vs the spread is awful in the last 18 games
Tomlin is shit and he will **** up again next season

i agree with the OL line issue, some of the D line is getting old, the play calling needs to be better, the secondary without troy doesnt work properly. But i'm very confident the steelers will make to the playoff next season.

If the browns shows up, the AFC north is going to be interesting next year.

I think houston will be the sleeper in the AFC next season
