Default New York Giants? Mel Kiper is an idiot!

Mel Kiper is a moron. He has them at #15 projected to take DE Carlos Dunlap, as do a few other well credited mock drafts. His argument:

"People might question the idea of taking Dunlap, but if you have a guy capable of being taken in the top five still there at No. 15, you're getting a remarkable value. Meanwhile, people point to the Giants' secondary, but the team quietly was in the bottom half of the NFL in sacks, and nothing helps a secondary better than a pass rush. You won't want a CB at No. 15, because after Haden there's a huge drop-off, so it's better to add help at LB or in the secondary with the next two picks."

Ok, so a team that was high in the league in sacks the past two seasons all of a sudden needs a DE because of one bad year? Where does Dunlap fit into the gameplan with Umenyiora, Tuck, and Kiwinuka still there? All are young and all are extremley talented. Dunlap is a 293 pound defensive end. If he were to play anywhere on the line it wouldn't make sense. Canty, Alford, Cofield, Robbins, Tuck, Umenyiora, Kiwinuka, Tollefson. Is this really a pressing need? How does it not make sense to take Taylor Mays in a secondary that was torn apart all year long? The only thing that would make this make sense is if somehow the Giants lost Robbins, Cofield, and traded Umenyiora or Kiwinuka which reports are they will trade neither and are almost locked into Cofield.

This makes no sense, Mel Kiper is an idiot. If the Giants can go Taylor Mays in the 1st and Brandon Spikes in the second I will be a very happy man on draft day.

Taylor Mays was proven to be slightly overrated this year. The media fell in love with his size. It's his coverage skills that have been brought into question. There may be better options at DB value wise or in free agency in an uncapped year..

Yes but he is still a freak. Great size, incredible speed, and can lay down the big hit. With this type of player I think he has all the tools to learn how to cover at the NFL level. I think he could learn.

Defensive line and especially defensive pass rusher is a great position to have depth. You can keep rotating in fresh bodies and have someone rested aimed at the QB at all times.

Yes, but we already have the best depth in the league in my opinion. Why waste a mid 1st round pick on it? If we wanted more depth we can address this in later rounds. The Giants traditionally are great at drafting in the lower rounds. Got Umenyiora round 2, Tuck round 2, etc. Don't see why we would waste a good pick on this.

Mel Kiper does this for a living. Maybe he knows something we don't?

Taylor Mays went from "this god on defense" before the year to pretty average after the year. He was definitely exposed this year.

I did not realize that Eric Berry was considered to be a huge dropoff.

Eric Berry is probably going to go top 5 in the entire draft dude. Plus, he's a strong safety, not a corner.

it never works out the way mel kiper thinks. what helps him is he probably get's some good and some bad information on what teams are thinking about doing.

Numbers dont lie. Their pass rush sucks. Once they got rid of spags the defense sucks. Spags scheme was the only reason they got pressure.

Well heres the thing. Normally if you look at the kind of year the Giants had (giving up a ton of passing yards/no sacks) someone who doesn't watch the games would say, "oh well it's hard to cover with no pass rush". All year I watched the pass rush not have time to get there because no one was covering except Corey Webster. If you have a chance go back and watch that Falcons game. See how many times Bruce Johnson got beat. Half the time they were getting through the line but the ball would already be gone. They knew how strong the Giants pass rush was so they adjusted by keeping in extra blockers and getting rid of it quickly. I still have faith in this defensive line.

I do agree about keeping Spags don't but think that is the full reason they sucked. However, if I was in the front office of the Giants I would have given Spags head coach money and gaurenteed him the head job when Coughlin retired.

He has Eric Berry going #3 to the Bucs. I don't think there is any chance Berry is available at #15 and if he is the Giants will pick him in 30 seconds.

Check Mel Kiper's mock drafts against who actually is called to the stage and you will see he is no better than my two year old daughter when it comes to who which teams may pick. Kiper is only good when you get to day 2 of the draft, but what knucklehead watches day 2? Kiper equals useless to drafts of NFL teams.

Why? He made it clear he didn't want to play for Sheridan and now he is gone. The front office absolutley loves this guy. He was one of the no-touches in the Eli Manning trade. Everytime someone calls about Osi the Giants pretty much instantly have hung up. Now, with a little bit of drama the Giants won't trade Osi unless they are getting a hell of a deal. They would much rather trade him after next year to re-sign Kiwi and get more value out of him with a shorter contract.

Mel Kiper is a shill for the agents. He's basically a talking head for hire. He'll basically fly his flag wherever the wind blows as long as he gets paid.

I'm not sure he's going to be a S at the next level. He doesn't have the body.

Remember, He was an elite H.S. CB who Tennessee (for whatever reason) played out of position. Plus a lot of his plays were "in the box / close to the LOS" anyway, CB is his natural position.

Here's hoping that the Leos take him at #2 and convert him to CB. We need a pass defense badly (32nd in the NFL) but then again we need a lot of things on both sides of the ball.

Just as long as we don't take the inevitable busts that are Suh or McCoy at 2 (drafting a DT in the Top-5 is suicide) I'll be happy with the pick (Okung or Berry).

hey givemeabj , im a die hard giants fan and i completely agree with everything you have said. and great info on what kiper is saying . hopefully he is wrong, unless giants plan on trading there 1st pick then there is no value in taking value if you dont need it. we need help now in order to make a playoff run. we are not a rebuilding team. we are all set. i cant imagine why they would need value at this point

They just won the Super Bowl two years ago. Sheesh.

They've been in a slump since Plax shot himself. Who knew he was critical to this team?
