So we all remember '07 when that smug, little, Napolean-complex having, hoddie-wearing coach ran up scores on over-matched opponents. the press conference when he was asked why he went for on 4th down up by 20 in the 4th and he said, "We wanted to give them a chance to stop us." followed by his wry, poop-eating smile.

so then to see him quit last night made it even worse. it was the equivalent of a six year old taking his ball and going home. you never quit when your team was up 45-7 on the Redskins in '07, but you quit last night. can't take it when your team isn't the one winning?

It was so classless of Darren Sharper to run that interception back so far last night with his team up by 21 in the 4th quarter, wasn't it? He should have just taken a knee.

This is my take on teams "running up the score". I've played adult, competitive sport for over twenty years now (and my age is no doubt partly why I got my collarbone snapped recently) and inevitably I've been on the losing side of some horrible beatings. As a competitor, the absolute LAST thing I ever wanted and the thing I hated the most was when a team that was hammering us would basically quit. It's patronising and just rubs in the embarrassment. I wanted them to keep playing to the end.

I read your post twice and you seem to be missing my point. I have mixed feelings on running up scores in the NFL just because i expect coaches to show some respect for one another. just that one against the Skins in '07 when Washington had tons of injuries and Pats kept throwing in the 4th quarter with their starters was uncalled for. not only that, all that negative Karma got them a SB loss and Brady lost in the first game of the next season. Football gods no like that....

however, the point of my posting this thread is having done it in the past, Bill could at least take his medicine. instead he quit.

how someone handles winning says as much about them as how they handle losing.

he has now failed at both...

Thanks for your kind post, nerds. But I part company with you on this, completely. It seems blindingly apparent to me that Belickick handled losing with complete dignity last night; the game was done and he let the clock run down and get the game over with.

The Saints could then have attemped to pile on some points, they chose not to, as is their prerogative.

By the way, it doesn't seem like you have mixed feelings on 'running up the score', it would appear you dislike it 100%. I do understand that attitude even though I don't agree personally even from the perspective of the losing team.

1. Pats ran up score in '07.

2. Pats get asses handed to them on MNF and quit with 5:26 to play.

Limey - think it depends on the definition of running up the score. think some coaches get accused of doing it when they are not. believe it or not, i don't think Pats ran the score up on Titans when they pounded them 59-0. in fact i am not sure any game in week 7, the week of the blowouts, other than the maybe the Colts on the Rams qualified as running it up. even Cincy's 45-10 drubbing of Chi. but there comes a point in every game, as you astutely pointed out in last night's game, where the outcome is decided (although i could argue last night, with one of the most prolific offenses ever, 5:26 is a lot of time) and both teams know it. situations like that, late in a game, and a team keeps in starters and plays with urgency.

I also hate the fact that coaches that do it risk potential injuries to starters for meaningless points.

i was all for Belichick's call on 4th down in the Colts game is well. even though the guy is a douchebag, it was the right call. you don't get 3 rings by accident. however, after that Tedy and others were saying it sent the wrong message to the defense. well what message does not playing hard til the final whistle say to his team?

Futbol, americans call it soccer, is awesome. i just want to go to one match someday between any top tier EPL teams, or a world cup match as long as Spain is in it. and as long as i was in no danger of getting shanked by a soccer hooligan.

got a scar under my chin from someone taking me out from behind in one of my first ever rollerblade/hockey games. it is manly.

part of the reason i was all for his 4th and 2 against the Colts, was people saying 70 yards was impossible, but 30 was a no-doubter? and the Pats had 488 yards at that point. but, much like you non-con angle, it was a non-div game and a loss still left them with a 2 game lead in the AFC East. it was their best chance to win the game and if they didn't make it so what, still have their division wrapped up shortly. and they had little shot at home field as Colts are going to win 14 at least?

and completely agree with your point, would take a miracle to comeback and win given the situation. but as i said, it was weird to see a coach chuck it in. even if he would have at least kept attacking on offense instead of run, run, short pass, punt on the first series. i just can't imagine some old-school hard ass like Ditka or Lombardi not having his guys play hard til the final whistle.

maybe i just old fashioned and wrong, wouldn't be the first or last time...
