It's an odd claim about 'elite players' since I think most NFL obervers would say that the Patriots won their Superbowls without a bunch of elite players. People will always say, too, that Belichick wouldn't have had such an extraordinary level of success at New England without Tom Brady. This is probably true, but then you might want to ask what Mike Shanahan has really done without John Elway, for instance. And you might want to consider how the Patriots were extraordinarily unlucky not to make the playoffs last season behind a quarterback who had never even started a college game, let alone an NFL game. And you might want to remember that Belichick deserves massive credit for Brady becoming what he is. Most coaches would have stuck the franchise quarterback Bledsoe back in as soon as he was healthy, rather than stick with the 6th rounder who didn't do anything terribly special in his first handful of games.

I don't think Belichick's record at Cleveland means he 'blows', either. It seems fair to assume a guy might learn and get better as a head coach as he goes on, doesn't it?
