Indy better bet than Saints to go 16-0
The Saints and Colts are both past the halfway mark of perfect seasons, but oddsmakers don’t think they have even half a chance at going 16-0.
Odds were never stacked this high against the juggernaut Patriots of 2007, which is why bettors didn’t make a ton of money off perfect season props. Those Patriots were destroying teams, covering 20-point spreads.
This season, the water-cooler discussions around perfect seasons revolve around both New Orleans and Indianapolis. If not for the injury situation facing the Colts, you’d think they would be shorter odds than +500.
And if you can imagine such a thing as double perfection, the odds are huge and a small wager could turn into a terrific payoff. That scenario is currently a +2400 underdog position, meaning a risk of just $10 would pay $240. Risk $100, it’s $2,400 in your pocket.
The more plausible scenario – and the one oddsmakers figure will happen – is that neither team goes 16-0. The odds on both failing is -800, meaning you need to risk $80 just to win $10.
“An awful lot of things have to go right for a team to go 16-0 and the Colts are lucky we’re even having this discussion today after they escaped Sunday night,” said Oddsmaker Richard Gardner. “Dodging bad luck, freak injuries and winning seven more games while everyone is gunning for you? That’s tough and our odds reflect that.”
After this Sunday’s game at Baltimore, where the Colts opened as small 1-point underdogs against a Raven team playing on short rest, the schedule is ripe for the winning - Houston, Tennessee, Denver, Jacksonville, NY Jets and Buffalo.
The trends (and the fact Baltimore has struggled of late) would seem to point to a Colt win. They are 8-1 SU in their past nine road games and have covered five in a row against the Ravens (going 6-0 SU dating to 2002).
They are +500 at Bodog and the Saints are a longer shot at +600 because of two dangerous dates on the New Orleans schedule. After struggling to win the past few weeks (they haven’t covered a spread the past three weeks according to the ATS game logs), the Saints have home dates against the Patriots in Week 12 and the Cowboys in Week 15.
New Orleans should arrive at 10-0 more easily than the Colts. They visit pesky Tampa Bay, which has become a dangerous 1-8 team. The Saints opened as 13.5-point favorites, but bettors appear to be heeding the underdog rally the past three weeks, betting the number down to -11.
Of note, the Bucs are just 1-7 ATS in their past eight home games and the Saints are 5-2 ATS in their past seven trips to Tampa. If the Saints survive that test, it’s back home to the Superdome to await the Patriots, who will want to protect their perfect legacy.
Maybe Coach Belichick will be more careful and not let another undefeated team off the hook with a fourth-down decision in crunch time.
Which teams will go undefeated in the 2009 NFL Regular Season?
Just the New Orleans Saints +600
Just the Indianapolis Colts +500
Both +2400
Neither -800
