I'm kinda curious about this myself...

I plan to make a wager on this...

I feel a little comfortable with taking the Steelers for the Spread.

    I don't know about the over/under.

My Gut tells me that these teams can easily rack up this many points...but logic tells me that the Steelers D will keep this a low scoring a game for the Titans.

I gave some insight on this game on my blog. Ill post it here. (I like your play on the over as well, the winning team in this matchup the past 5 games have scored 30+ points by themselves)

Titans vs Steelers Thursday Night NFL
    September 7, 2009 by payingthejuice

This game features the defending Super Bowl Champs opening up their season at home against the Tennessee Titans. The Titans in 2008 had their best season, going 13-3, but quickly losing in their first game in the playoffs. The Titans record in 2008 is quite decieving in the eyes of many bettors, as most of their wins came against teams who didnt make the playoffs in 2008. On the flip side, the Steelers cruised through the playoffs and played an excitng Super Bowl, with what many deemed to have the toughest schedule in the 2008 season. The line opened up at -5 and has since been bumped up to -6 in favor of the Steelers, as we get closer to this game opening up the NFL Season. The total is set at 35.

The Titans return most of their defense, but the most important part of their defense is missing. Defensive Tackle Albert Haynesworth was lost to free agency this year, and he was a key reason of the Titans improbable 13-3 record. The Titans do return their 1-2 combo of running backs "Thunder & Lightening", but as Mike Tomlin of the Steelers said earlier this week, he will be having Parker and Mendenhall split carries as well this season. Everyone knows about the quick and agile back Willie Parker is, but lets look at Mendenhall as I predict he will be a HUGE KEY to the Steelers success this year.

Mendenhall recorded 1,300 yards and 21 touchdowns as a sophomore. As a junior, he rushed for 1,832 yards and 19 touchdowns, while averaging 11.6 yards per carry. In his last year, he averaged 9.1 yards per carry, rushing for 1,453 yards on 160 attempts and 14 touchdowns. Mendenhall ran an unofficial 4.36 in the 40yd dash. His run was officially timed at 4.45, which was sixth among all running backs at the NFL Scouting Combine. He saw limited action in 2008, as he had suffered an injury when he got his first start. Mendenhall has the speed of Parker, and the power of Steeler favorite Jerome Bettis. He will be exciting to watch. And with the Titans losing Haynesworth, look for both Parker and Mendenhall to find seams, and allow the Steelers to get an early lead, and control the game with the run.

This game also features a "Revenge Factor". The Steelers traveled to Tennessee in the 2008 season, where the Titans won. But taking it to far were the Titans, who during the game stomped on "Terrible Towels" on the sidelines. The Steelers and the Steelers fans I am sure have not forgotten this, and the home field advantage plays huge into the favor of the Steelers. Also the Steelers last 3 season openers, they have won the games easily, cruising to wins by 10 points or more.

The advantages all favor the Steelers on both sides of the ball. If the Steelers get an early lead in the 1st quarter, look for them to keep the ball on the ground, and pass only when needed, as they will control the clock. Taking the Steelers -6 at home, with the better offense/defense and revenge factor is a no-brainer. Hopefully you can grab this line before it raises yet again.

The only reason the line is that high is because of all the Pitt homers titans lose by a fg but cover

Here is the write-up from my thread as well.

Tennessee Titans @ Pittsburgh Steelers (PIT -5.5)

    1 unit play

Recent history has our back on this one (See quote below). The 5.5 seems like a big line this early, but this game shouldn't be within a TD. Since 2001 Superbowl winners have been (6-1-1) ATS week 1. This year should be no different. Tennessee got a great deal of its games last year based on Defense and running the ball, this week the Titans will truly learn what the absence of Albert Haynesworth is going to do to their defense and Chris Johnson and Lendale White will have their hands full against the a Pittsburgh defense who only allowed 80.2 yards per game on the ground last year.

This should be a game dominated by the defenses, the big difference is that Pitt still has the ability to move the ball and put up points, while Tennessee's run centered offense will fall behind early and have a hard time catching up. Look for Big Ben and company to pile on early and then grind the game down keeping Tennessee's defense on the field and Chris Johnson on the sideline. Albert Haynesworth left a huge hole in the middle of Tennessee's defensive line and the Pit runningbacks should find enough room not to allow Tennessee into the game.

lendale white should have just left those terrible towels alone. I'm looking for a prop on Lendale getting lit up tonight. Concussion maybe?

    I don't see Tennessee scoring 23 points....

Tennessee scored an average of 18.8 points per game last year....
Pittsburgh only allowed an average of 9.0 points per game last year...

Do you really see Tennessee scoring 23 points against Pits defense in Pittsburgh?

    I just don't see it.

I would guess I would lean toward more of a 13-7 game, I honestly don't see Tennessee scoring more than 10 points.

I did a blog write up on this game too. this is an easy pass. Superbowl champs "usually" have trouble so I want to see where they go from here. Pittsburgh D is solid and I think if they get up 10 0 they will grind the ball on the ground. Then you start to worry about the cover as one td will get the titans back into the game. There are better op's this weekend. Drink beer, have sex watch the game but it's not one I'm on.

i predict field goals in this one.. plenty.. so looking at Under 35..

as for the spread, -4.5 to -6 is not that big a deal ( -4.5 woulda been a steelers bet, but i let it slip away).. could push, but i would wait for 6.5 and try my luck on the titans real small.. of course 7.5 would be awesome.. but no way it gets there (i hope i am wrong ).. if it does, my whole bank goes on the titans.. (ok.. my bank is $50.. lol.. and I would not call it an all in as the card is already loaded for an 'emergancy' deposit )

    good luck!

will post thoughts if they change..

If it ever goes over 7 it becomes an easy titans bet.

    Green Dollar

if u really like money u will go with titans plus 6 they proved that they can play goood games against good def for example ten beat bal 13 10 in the reg season and beat pitsburg pretty good and lost to bal 13 10 in playoffs so this is not a push over team they come to play and plus ben to worried about the girl he raped in his head and remeber now ten was first seed in playoffs last year

I like the over especially if u can get 34. I like pittsburgh to win game so will take Pittsburgh/over 6 point teaser and play the over straight up at 35 or better.

You're best estimate of the game's final is 13-7, and yet your play is on Pitt -5.5 as opposed to the under of 35? Logic would dictate you should play the under. BOL.
