Default Basketball Parlay of the Day Contest - Thursday, 2/7/08

Listen up, basketball experts. Starting Friday (Feb 1) we will commence with the February Hoops Parlay Contest with the monthly grand prize a 22” widescreen LCD monitor. The rules are simple:

1. Check in the NBA BASKETBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Posted spreads and totals are the only eligible plays for grading. Both NBA and NCAA games included.

3. Two-game parlay picks, laying 10 to win 26. Post entire parlay at same time, no open parlays.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up, doesn’t have to be long, just a sentence or two about why you’re making your play. Here’s a THREAD from last year’s contest to be used for an example.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis for both games will be NO ACTION. Once your two-team parlay has been posted, you CANNOT change either play. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake (such as leaving out "Over" or "Under" or not clearly stating your selection), need to add analysis or wish to enter corrected lines, do so in a seperate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not tip off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not parlay selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts or congratulatory posts.

6. And here’s the fine print:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
  • One entry per household and IP address.
  • Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
  • Maximum one parlay pick per day, minimum 15 parlay plays needed to be eligible for monthly prize.
  • Tiebreaker - Win % of individual parlay legs. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head parlay match until winner determined.
  • All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
  • SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.
  • Residents outside the Continental US may be awarded the cash value prize instead of the monitor.

Cavs +5.5 - I think this should be a competitive game. Tmac is not 100% yet, and Cleveland should be able to keep it close down to the wire. I see 5.5 points as generous.

Wisc GB -2 - Not going to bet this one, but Valpo is likely to have a road letdown after their clash with Butler 2 days ago. Wisc GB is a decent team, I think they'll be able to pull out a win in this one.

UMASS/RI Under 170.5= there is a pretty good write up about this on the CBB forum. I think it stands a good chance of cashing.

Heat/76ers Over 189.5= neither team plays really good D, the Heat should have some energy without Shaq weighing them down. Looking for a 105-97 type game.

Houston/cavs under 184: expect a slow game with good D from Houston.

Miami +9 1/2: Expecting Miami to be competitive. Think Shaq leaving might actually spark em.

518 Rhode Island @ UMASS Under 170.5
It seems like this game is about 20 pts off, unless both teams catch fire from 3 land. It should be a hard fight tonight and it is very doubtful this games goes over.
529 Xavier @ Saint Louis Over 119
If my math is correct I belive this game will end up right around 129 total pts. Even though Saint Louis holds opponents to low scores it will be tough to hold the balanced offense of Xavier.

Indiana -2: It doesn't really matter where this game is being played. 18-3 Indiana is going up against 10-13 Illinois. The better team is clearly Indiana.

Clemson -1.5: Man do I hate the Tigers! However, despite my hatred, I hate losing money more. Virginia is struggling mightily right now with some below 40% shooting performances and Clemson is just a far superior team right now (as evidenced by their 16-5 record).

Indiana -2 I feel this is a weak line due to the poor play of Indiana in their last couple of games...they are the better team by far and should easily cover this spread and win by 8 or more.

Mass/RI under 170.5 Combined these 2 teams average 164.2 ppg while giving up 149 ppg combined. One bad shooting stretch by either team pretty much locks this one in.

cavs +5.5 playing really good as of late even beating celts 114-113. i expect them 2 b able to outmatch houston.

cavs/hou over i thot this line should b somewhere around 190 so ill gladly take it. cavs and hou can both put up mid 90's in points and i even think cavs put up about 100 in this 1 good luck

Miami/Philadelphia, under 189.5. Four straight unders in heads-up play, and Miami under is 4-1 in last five back-to-back games.

Golden State -13. Warriors are 5-0 in last five meetings at home, have dominated the series overall, and Chicago is playing a tough road sked.

Cavs +5 1/2 -- I think the Cavs can win this one, and if they dont it will be a real close match up...

Cavs/Rockets over 184 -- This should be a shootout and both these teams average over 90 per game I think this is low by about 10 points.

501 Miami Heat +10
10 points? The Heat is still an NBA team to get that many points from a team with 19-30 record.

504 Houston Rockets -5˝
The Cavs need Varejao to compete consistently.

544 Cal Irvine/Cal Poly Under 129˝
Cal Poly not the run and gun team of old. In fact, this team has changed a lot and for the worse. Irvine also has its shooting woes.

569 Portland State/Northern Arizona Over 143˝
Both of these teams can shoot the ball well. I expect them to score a ton in the first half, and just hope they can keep it over the number in a much slower 2H.

UVA +1.5, Clemson is not that good to win on the road

Drexel +11, GM is good, but Drexel should be ok with Bruiser Flint at the helm

Default Sould Be A Good Night

Miami - To Many Points For A Bad Team To Be Giving Might Win Straight Up.

Chicago - Gs Doesn't Play Good Enough Defense To Cover This Spread, Chicago Is Starting To Play Better.

Utah State +1.5 (at Fresno State)
Utah State is one of the best shooting teams in the country -50.5% from the field and 78.6% from the line. I love an underdog like that. Fresno State is not doing much in the WAC. Meanwhile Utah State is taking control of the WAC. Utah State wins this one.

Indiana -1.5 (at Illinois)
I say Indiana is going to get back on track with a win here, and I'm betting it will be by more than 1.5. Illinois has been a disappointment, with only two wins so far in conference play: Northwestern and Michigan. In fact, those are their only wins since the beginning of the year. I have to bet that they will not beat Indiana, an excellent team with realistic post-season hopes.

UMass under 170.5

I have this game at under 150 so I will not complain given 20 points cushion.

Clemson -1.5

Clemson has already played with the big boys of Duke and NC and faired well and their athletic ability will be more than enough to win the game despite lack of mental strength.

Cleveland Cavaliers +5˝
Houston Rockets Under 184

Should be a close game. Houston produces mostly unders against strong teams.

Heat +10...played tough last night...still have a chance to make a push for a low seed and may want to impress the newcomers they aquired...philly isnt great enough to be giving 10 pts anyway...

Pitt -3...At home vs a inconsistent WVU team...tight race for the big east a definite must win for the panthers.

Miami/Philly over 189.5 - This should be about an average tempo game with decent offense which should be enough to get over the number

CHicago/GSW under 214 - Both teams have injuries they are dealing with, especially the Bulls, just hoping that the Bulls show up somewhat on D to not let the Warriors score a bunch as the Bulls should struggle to score. Also hoping that Webber may slow up GSW a little with his love for holding the ball with no point down low to keep this under the number
