Default straight up or spread

I haven't seen a lot of people betting the games straight up. Is that because the money is not as good or because spreads make the action more intense?

It seems to me that the 50-50 would be better because the spread makes it a 60-40 (or something like that) for one of the teams. No?

That seems rational. I'm guessing you would play games that are as close to even money as possible?

Well than it would become similar to handicapping baseball, where you just pick the winer and have to deal with the juice, I think baseball is the hardest sport to handicap.
