Kings fined $30,000 for Detroit-bashing pictures
November 14, 2005
NEW YORK (AP) -- The Sacramento Kings were fined $30,000 by the NBA on Monday for showing derogatory images of Detroit on video screens prior to their home opener against the Pistons.
When the Pistons were introduced Nov. 8, the Arco Arena scoreboard flashed pictures of abandoned buildings, burned-out cars, piles of rubble and other negative images of Detroit. The Pistons won the game 102-88.
The Kings apologized that night and owners Joe and Gavin Maloof bought full-page ads that ran in The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press, expressing "great respect for Detroit's long and rich tradition as a landmark American city and the incredibly positive impact the Motor City has made over the course of our country's history."

No freedom of speech in the NBA. Got to love it. How does that go? "I Love This Game"?

If I owned the Kings I'd promote whoever did that and tell him/her to keep up the good work. Was it falsehoods that were displayed? Nope.
When the Blazers come to play put up images of pot leafs, bongs and covers of High Times. When the 76'ers come to play show close-ups of Iverson's tattoos and show his mug shot from The Smoking Gun. When the Lakers roll into town have an anti-rape ad on the screen all game long and tell your PA announcer to refer to Kobe Bryant as "Bean" all night ("Foul on Bean"...."Basket by Bean"...etc.).

I grew up in Michigan...in a suburb outside of Detroit and let me tell you DET is one of the scariest cities I have ever been to. I remember we use to go downtown to Tigers' games and it was safe then b/c there was a lot of security but you have about 30 minutes after the game finishes after that you better get going b/c you never know who you are going to run into.
Michigan is a nice state but I'd probably stay away from Detroit and Pontiac too.

Maybe, but how many true rivalries exist in sports anymore? Most that do are in college sports. I don't like or follow the NBA but are there any rivalries in that league? The Lakers v. Celtics rivalry ended when Bird and Magic retired. The NBA could use a good feud or two between teams (but not like the Pistons and Pacers last year). Of course, if that happens today's NBA players are likely to whip out a gun, along with the members of their posse.

dudes, I'm certain this is a move they regretted...thus, the newspaper ad by the Maloofs...Kings fans, and the organization know better than this...trust me, I've followed them for many years and been to many games...the crowd gets pumped on it's own, they don't need pictures of run down areas of Detroit to fire them up...

The pistons don't even play in Detroit...they play in a posh upscale city called Auburn Hills. Detroit and Auburn Hills are likely going to different countries.

has not one of ya'all been downtown lately. True it hasn't completely turned around but compaired to what it was when the Pistons won back to backs in the late 80's its much better now. Myself and three friends walked in the dead of the night from Comerica Park to MGM casino back over to Greek town Casino then over to Hockeytown(bar) and I think only encountered 2 homeless people in the stumbling process. Detroit isn't city beautiful, but has come along way in the last 8 years. Illitch owns enough land now near Ford field and comerica to put the new arena for the Red Wings. That will put two of the three casinos and all three (downtown) sports teams within walkin distance. I'll be flyin back there in January for some business discussions and I'll report back. By the way you still have to avoid the "cass corridor" area, still very dangerous.APPLE
