Default Red Wings bring back Hasek for third time

The Detroit Red Wings looked to their past to settle their goaltending present, bringing back Dominik Hasek for the third time on Monday.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said the team signed Hasek, a six-time Vezina Trophy winner and two-time Hart Trophy winner, to a one-year contract. He did not make terms of the deal available.

Hasek played the 2005-06 season in Ottawa, going 28-10-4 in 43 appearances with five shutouts. He had a 2.09 goals-against average and .925 save percentage, both good for second among NHL goalies.

But an injury suffered during the 2006 Winter Olympics forced Hasek to miss the playoffs, and the Senators were eliminated by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round.

The Red Wings acquired Hasek from the Sabres in July 2001 , and he led Detroit to the 2002 Stanley Cup, posting a then-record six shutouts, before abruptly retiring.

He returned to the Red Wings for the 2003-04 season but was limited to 14 games because of a groin injury.

In 79 games over two seasons with Detroit, Hasek went 49-18-10 with a 2.17 GAA.

Hasek has a career record of 324-206-82 in 638 games -- the fifth-most wins among active goaltenders and 18th all-time. He represented the Czech Republic three times at the Olympics, leading the team to the gold medal in 1998.
