Default EP36's Light The Lamp: 2009-2010

Howdy fellas & any ladies in attendance. Gonna track my season-long luck with pucks. Been making picks "off-the-map" of tracking so far, so gonna start tracking with this pick. Any criticism, etc. is welcomed. Let's Light The Lamp and get us some winners!

    Pucks Play #1
    Blackhawks/Flames OVER 5.5 (-130 DSI)
Calgary has given up at least 3 goals in all 5 games in 2009. The Flames offense has been keeping pace with their leaky D by scoring 19 goals. Chicago has tallied 13 in 4 games to-date. The Hawks D is credited with 10 goals against. The Flames PP has been lethal, converting 7 of 15 chances & the Chicago PK unit has let in 3 PP goals in their last two, meaning special teams could help a ton tonight. The Hawks PP has scored one PP goal or more in 3 of 4. Both Chicago home games have hit for 6 or more goals.

Interesting clash. Sharks O vs. Coyotes D. I think the Sharks win, but I'm not paying -200 for the ML on that. I'm siding slightly to the OVER. Sharks O hasn't been slowed by anyone yet & their goaltending is a little shaky ... think it's got a better shot than hoping the 'Yotes D up all night. Playing it small "off-the-book" so to speak.

Sharks are notorious slow starters, so an early goal or two from the Coyotes could make this one sail over 5.5... I could see the Sharks looking ahead a bit to their upcoming road trip and losing, so I think I'll play O 5.5 ... Good Luck EP

Sharks tank a lot of games at the Shark Tank, no pun intended. Coyotes will win 1-0 or 2-1

Nice call moses... I think the coyotes are a huge sleeper team this year. They play solid D and Bryzgalov is playing awesome. I will keep backing the Coyotes and the under in their games.

They dominated their game vs columbus the other night - doubling the number of shots that columbus had. Just one of those games. They have also given both Pit and LA their only loses and they were both road games for PHX.

They are starting a nice 4 home stand hosting STL, BOS (who is really stuggling), DET (which should be a good test), and LA. Will be interested to see how they play after opening the season w 4 of 5 on the road.

    Pucks Play #2
    Blue Jackets/Flames OVER 5.5 (-110)
I see no reason to go against the grain of the Flames' form to start this season as they are a perfect 6 for 6 in OVERs. Their offense has been solid, putting up 24 goals, while the D and goaltending has let in a whopping 23. Columbus has scored at least twice in each of their four games this season, while yielding 3 or more twice. Calgary's blown 5 goal lead last night in Chicago has to be fresh in their minds & be it McElhinney or Kiprusoff between the pipes, the Jackets should find the back of the net tonight against a fatigued & somewhat demoralized team I think.

Guess I got suckered in tonight. Wanted to play the over in the 2nd period for the Avs & Leafs, but my doosh bag book had it at -200 (1.5).

    Pucks Play #3
    Grand Salami UNDER 29.5 (-110)
5 games on the slate tonight and I like the UNDER here. Kings & Rangers, Penguins & Hurricanes get it started at 7pm ET. I think these are two key games. Kings D & goaltending has been stingy in their last two with 2-1 finals in both contests. The road has found it tougher for them to score after their electric start of 15 goals in 3 games at home. The Rangers come in after scoring 7 against the hapless Leafs, otherwise they have averaged just over 3 goals per game, conceding 2 per match. Carolina has been better on D at home with just 5 goals in 3 games compared to 12 in two road matches. Outside of a 7 goal outburst against Florida, the Canes have struggled, scoring no more than two goals in any other game. The UNDER has been prevalent in this series, hitting in 9 of the last 14. Edmonton & Chicago could go anywhere really in the next batch. I'm guessing anywhere from 5-8 goals - this will be a big swing game for the Salami. Nashville & Dallas I think is a solid shot to hit 5 or less then Minnesota & Anaheim to clean it up.

    My estimates: LA/NYR (4-5), PIT/CAR(5), EDM/CHI(7), NASH/DAL (5), ANA/MIN (5-6)

Even with the high end estimates, my totals would be hitting at 28, maybe 29.

    Pucks Play #4
    Kings/Red Wings UNDER 6 (-115)
After a solid offensive start, the Kings have been stuck in the mud over their last 3, with just 2 goals in each game. Goaltending has been iffy for them to start, but Jonathan Quick (should start tonight) had righted himself with just two goals allowed in his last two games, both on the road. The Red Wings have had trouble putting the puck in the net and that doesn't figure to be any easier with Datsyuk out and more line changes due to that. Detroit has yet to top 3 goals in any game this season & half those goals have come courtesy of their power play. Special teams figures to be the key tonight as the Kings have shut down the opposition when their PK unit does the job. Detroit has scored a PP goal in each of their 5 games, but also conceded a PP goal in each. Big key for this is that whether it's Osgood or Howard, the goaltending & D for Detroit has to begin improving if they want to win. UNDER has hit in 2 of their 3 home games and also in 2 of L.A.'s 3 roadies this season.

Not cool. 4-2 with less than :10 and LA has an empty net? DET scores and beats me. Man, I have found some sweet bad beats in the last week.

    Pucks Play #5
    Stars/Bruins OVER 5.5 (-125)
Boston has yet to concede less than 3 goals in any game this season. Just 1 of their 5 games has played under a total of 6 goals. Their offense has picked it up of late with 7 goals in their last two games. Dallas is clicking right now offensively, coming in off a 6 goal throttling of Nashville. The Stars are averaging 4 goals per game and have scored at least 3 goals in their last 4 straight. Defensively, they got the shutout against a hapless Predators squad, but had yielded 14 goals in 4 games prior to that. Special teams should give an edge to Dallas getting more goals with the Stars having PP goals in 4 of their 5 games, while Boston has yielded at least 1 PP goal in all 5 games and multiple PP goals in 3 games. This could also be the game where Boston's PP (0 for 17 in their last 3) gets on track as the Stars have allowed multiple PP goals in 3 of 5 and a PP goal in 4 of 5 overall. Neat factoid for anyone betting on a side, 3 of Turco's 4 starts for Dallas have gone to shootouts.

    Pucks Play #5
    Sharks/Islanders OVER 5.5 (-120)
San Jose has slacked off after their hot offensive start, scoring just one goal in their last two. The Isles should be the tonic for that as NY has conceded 19 goals in 5 games. NY has scored at least twice in 4 of 5. San Jose has conceded multiple goals in 5 of 7.

    Pucks Play #6
    Predators/Capitals UNDER 6 (-110)
Washington has tightened up their defense in their last three games, yielding 7 goals in that span after allowing 14 in their first 3. The Caps offense is still potent with 26 goals in 7 games, but the 4 goals in their last game was their best output in their last 3. Nashville continues to look lost offensively with just two goals in their last four and only 8 goals all season. The goaltending/defense started strong for the Preds and then got tore up for consecutive 6 goal games, but they only allowed 3 to the high flying Blackhawks last time out. The PK units may wind up deciding this yay or nay.

    Pucks Play #8
    Canucks/Oilers OVER 5.5 (-115)
Oilers have played all 7 of their games to totals of 6 or better. Canucks have had defensive/goaltending troubles with teams that possess potent offenses. Vancouver has given up 3 goals or more in 5 of their 7 games this season, but have combatted that with 2 goals or better on offense in 6 of 7. Oilers have given up at least 2 goals in 6 of 7, while scoring 3 or better in each game to this point.

    Pucks Play #9
    Blues/Penguins UNDER 6 (-125)
The Blues have played four straight to totals UNDER 6 and are coming off their first shutout, a 5-0 win vs. Anaheim. The Pens haven't yielded more than 2 goals in their last 4 straight and have hit the UNDER in all 3 of their home games thus far.

    Pucks Play #10
    Colorado +121
Maybe returning home will help solve some of the Wild's problems, but at this price, I'm siding with red hot Colorado. The Avalanche have won four straight on the road and are just a shootout loss away from have a 5-0 road trip working. Colorado has been steady offensively with 3 or more goals in 6 of their 7 games. Minnesota has failed to score more than 2 goals in 5 of 7 and four straight, so if the Avalanche jump out early they could skate away with win #5 in a row. Colorado has also shown a knack for scoring in the 3rd period when they need it - 3 goals @ DET & the decisive goal @ MON the game prior to that.

    Pucks Play #12
    Panthers/Penguins OVER 6 (-105)
Florida remains a mess defensively and in between the pipes. Vokoun gets the nod tonight with his 3.68 GAA. He's been tagged for at least three goals in each of his 6 starts this season and faces a Pittsburgh squad that has 12 home goals in 4 games with those 12 coming in the span of three games. Fluery rests tonight, so Brent Johnson starts which could mean the Panthers continue their streak of scoring at least two goals in five straight heading into tonight. They have only been shutout once and have scored 2 or better in 6 of 7. The Pens have yet to record a shutout this season, yielding 7 goals in their 4 home games. Pittsburgh is on fire offensively with 26 goals during this 6 game winning streak, so they should be capable - even with Gonchar out on the PP - of putting up 4 goals or so, leaving Florida just needing to get their 2 to at worst get the push home tonight. With the goaltending situation as is though, I'm hoping more like 4-3 or 5-2.

    Play #11: Sabres/Lightning OVER 5.5 (-110)
The last 8 games between these two clubs have gone to at least six goals over the past two seasons plus. Buffalo is in the midst of a big run of offense with 19 goals in their last 4, conceding 11 in that span - multiple goals in each game. Tampa comes in off one of their best games, beating San Jose 5-2 at home. They have 16 goals in 4 home games, conceding at least two in each of those.

    Play #12: Oilers/Flames OVER 5.5 (-140)
Two meetings already this season with 7 goals in each. Edmonton has scored three goals or more in all but one game this season. Calgary has 4 goals or better in 7 of 9. Not looking too deep into this one.

    Play #15: Blue Jackets/Kings OVER 5.5 (-110)
Columbus has scored 17 goals in their last four games, while yielding exactly the same. Los Angeles has also had a solid offensive output with 14 goals in their last 3. Both Kings' home games have wound up with 9 goals. The Blue Jackets' 6 road matches have hit for 6 or more goals five times. Quick starts for Columbus, he has given up 15 goals in his last 5 starts and gave up 3 to Columbus in a 4-1 loss earlier this season. Mason has given up 10 goals in his last 2 and is likely to start tonight. He hasn't given up less than 3 goals in any of his four road starts.

    Play #16: Islanders/Canadiens OVER 5.5 (-105)
Rematch from just 4 days ago where Montreal whipped NY, 5-1. The Habs may have found some offense finally with 10 goals in their last two games powerd by their PP that went 3 for 10 in that span. The Isles PK unit has yielded 7 PP goals in their last 6 games, so Montreal may find some more succes on the job tonight. NY has given up 18 goals in 4 road games this season. They're not lighting it up offensively, but they have yet to be shutout this season and average just over 2 goals per game on the road. They have multiple goals in 6 of 9. With just one win on the season, this shapes up for another Montreal bash job on the Isles - if they can keep their newfound offensive ryhthym, I think the OVER has a solid shot here in a 4-2 type of game or a repeat of last week's 5-1 game would be just fine!

Not a big fan of anything tonight & well who would care with my mighty record anyhow, here's some fade material though on my leans for tonight: Flyers/Caps OVER 6, Colorado +118, Vancouver +102. I think one of those dogs will get a win tonight, Canucks more likely.

    Play #17: Coyotes/Blue Jackets OVER 5.5 (+100)
Both teams have been atrocious defensively/in net over the past couple of games. After a stifling defensive start, Phoenix has let in 10 goals in their last two games. Columbus has been drilled for 22 goals in their last 4 games. The Coyotes have scored 3 or better in 4 of their last 5, so they should be equipped to take care of any sloppy play defensively by Columbus, while the Jackets have scored 19 in their last 5 to keep up with their poor defensive play. Penalty killing has been the killer for both teams with 6 PP goals let in by Phoenix in their last 3 and 7 PP goals let in by Columbus in their last 3.
