ThanX for the update Vegas - I added the data from your article.

Here is another article of interest:

The last time NHL owners and players squabbled over millions, it cost them the 2004-2005 season.

The current lockout has the same no-win feel for hockey fans, with one exception: The Internet is now much better at streaming live games from different leagues. Die-hards can log on to watch NHL talent from the present (minor-league pro hockey and the Russian league) and future (Canadian and U.S. juniors). None of this may compare to Flyers-Pens, but the leagues below will have to do for now.

    Kontinental Hockey League
Best logo: Dynamo Moscow. The classic D logo stands out in a league full of busy crests.
Best team name: Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. The rest sounds baffling, but Torpedo alone makes it the coolest name in the KHL.
Team to watch: Metallurg Magnitogorsk has already signed Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Gonchar, both of whom may be in action as early as next week. Pens reunion!
Player to watch: Alex Ovechkin will be in the KHL, but it remains unclear which team he will sign with. Until Ovie's deal is finalized, keep an eye on Alex Radulov of CSKA Moscow. The gifted sniper hit a sour note in Nashville but led the KHL in scoring last season.
Fight frequency: Occasional. Aside from the bullies of Vityaz Chekhov, which had the top four players in penalty minutes last season, KHL players mostly keep their hands to themselves.
    Season began: Sept. 4
    Where to watch: http://tv.khl.ru/

    European league info

RUSSIAN K.H.L. Widely considered the world’s second-best league, the Kontinental Hockey League is the present-day home to the great clubs of the Soviet era. But where once teams were sponsored by the likes of the army, the Interior Ministry and labor unions, today they are sponsored by national energy companies, regional energy companies and the billionaire owners of energy companies.
During the 2004-5 lockout, Russia’s top circuit was called the Superliga. Vincent Lecavalier, Brad Richards and Nikolai Khabibulin arrived from Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay to help Ak Bars Kazan celebrate the 1,000th birthday of the Tatarstan capital with a championship, but it failed. Instead Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk helped Dynamo Moscow win the title.
In 2008 the league reorganized as the K.H.L. under the direction of the Gazprom executive Alexander Medvedev, with grand visions of expansion into Asia and Western Europe; the Kremlin leader Vladimir V. Putin even called the league “an instrument of Russian foreign policy.”
Today the league has indeed expanded beyond the Soviet borders, to the Czech Republic and Slovakia. But it has suffered some catastrophic setbacks. In 2008 Avangard Omsk’sAlexei Cherepanov, 18, died of heart failure when the arena he was playing in had inadequate medical equipment. Last year, the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team was killed in a plane crash, highlighting the alarming danger of air travel in Russia.
Still, the 26-team league is the lockout home of Datsyuk at CSKA Moscow, Alex Ovechkin at Dynamo, Ilya Kovalchuk at SKA St. Petersburg and Evgeni Malkin at Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

    FINNISH SM-LIIGA
Because of the impenetrability of the Finnish language to outsiders, few non-Finns skate in the 14-team league, the notable exceptions being Brian Rafalski and Tim Thomas. Still, it is generally ranked the second-best league in Europe and has produced the N.H.L. snipers Jari Kurri and Teemu Selanne and several star goalies like Miikka Kiprusoff, Pekka Rinne and Niklas Backstrom.

The league’s most famous club is Jokerit Helsinki (yes, it means Jokers), but one of its most successful is Karpat, in the northern university town of Oulu. Karpat (the name means Stoats, a kind of weasel or ermine) won the championship in 2004-5 with only one locked-out N.H.L. player in the lineup. This time it will have at least two — Carolina’s Jussi Jokinen, a Karpat alumnus, and San Jose’s Jason Demers.

    SWEDISH ELITSERIEN
On Friday the Swedish government declared illegal theElitserien’s ban on signing locked-out players to short-term contracts, so the influx of Swedish N.H.L. stars to the 12-team league is on.

In 2004-5, almost 75 N.H.L. players spent the lockout in the Elitserien, including Henrik Zetterberg, the Sedin twins and even Zdeno Chara. Daniel Alfredsson arrived from Ottawa to help Frolunda Gothenburg win that year’s championship — although it was really the work of a young goalie named Henrik Lundqvist, who racked up a record .962 save percentage and was named the league’s most valuable player. Lundqvist, now the backbone of the Rangers, may return to his hometown club.
Each year the Swedish champions receive the Le Mat Trophy, donated in 1926 by Raoul Le Mat, an American film director considered a founding father of Swedish hockey, and by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

    CZECH EXTRALIGA
Tight finances have dogged the Czech Republic’s top league for years, but it maintains proud traditions that stretch back to 1909, the year the first Czechoslovakian champions were crowned. Today, Prague is home to the eternal rivals Sparta and Slavia, with Slavia skating at the O2 Arena, at 18,000 the second-largest arena for hockey in Europe.

In 2004-5, Pardubice won the championship, reinforced by the locked-out N.H.L. players Milan Hejduk and Ales Hemsky. But this time the marquee club of the 14-team league is Kladno, owned and led on the ice by Jaromir Jagr, and bolstered by Tomas Plekanec, Marek Zidlicky, Tomas Kaberle and Jiri Tlusty. So popular is Jagr’s team of all-stars that its debut game was moved from Kladno’s Winter Stadium (capacity 8,600, but with only 1,600 seats) to the O2 in Prague, where nearly 16,000 turned out.

    SWISS N.L.A.
The 12-team National League A is a popular destination for lockout refugees, who have enjoyed the quality of life in Switzerland, as well as the traditions and lively fan culture of Swiss hockey. Jason Spezza will pay more for his insurance than he will make skating for Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, but he said he picked it so his wife and two young daughters could go, too. “I wanted to make sure I was playing in Switzerland,” he said.

Joe Thornton and Rick Nash so enjoyed themselves winning the 2004-5 championship for Davos that they eagerly returned to the mountain resort club last week. (It helps that Thornton married a Swiss woman he met during the last lockout.)
But it is the terrace culture at games that impresses most, like a soccer crowd taken indoors, performing elaborately choreographed chants and flag displays. Well, not entirely indoors: the rink at the tiny village club Ambri-Piotta is partly outdoors, but the cold does not stop its fans from waving gigantic banners celebrating rebel heroes like Geronimo and Che Guevara.

    SLOVAKIAN EXTRALIGA
Less wealthy than its Czech counterpart, the Slovakian Extraliga lost its only big-time club this season. Slovan Bratislava, the flagship since 1921, jumped to the K.H.L., leaving 10 mostly small-town clubs to vie for the domestic championship.

As of Friday afternoon, only one locked-out N.H.L. player had signed: Tomas Tatar of Detroit. He will play for Dukla Trencin — but only until the Grand Rapids Griffins’ American Hockey League season begins Oct. 12.

    GERMAN D.E.L.
The 14-team Deutsche Eishockey Liga has long been a decent-paying, comfortable home for North Americans looking for a better hockey life than riding the buses in the minors. Eisbären Berlin won the championship in six of the last eight years, including 2004-5, when the Polar Bears were led by Olaf Kolzig and Erik Cole. But how can any hockey fan resist a league that includes a team called Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg?

Was trying to figure out why the fukk Kopitar would sign with Mora, made no sense until I read his brother plays there, will make them top contenders.

Nicklas Backstrom (caps) has hinted he may go to Brynas (swedish elite league) if possible, and the lockout appears to last more than a couple of months.

I think Sweden is going to see a major influx of locked-out players after this ruling:
    http://slapshot.blogs.nytimes.com/20...da/?ref=hockey

Ruling Opens Door for Lundqvist to Play in Sweden

By JEFF Z. KLEINSweden’s top league, the Elitserien, has been ordered by the government to lift its ban against short-term contracts, opening the way for locked-out N.H.L. players to play in the only European league that had blocked their entry.
The government Competition Authority handed down a decision Friday thatthe Elitserien’s ban violates Swedish and European labor laws. (Translationhere.) Any club continuing to ban locked-out N.H.L. players faces a $3 million fine. The decision had been expected since the Competition Authority general counsel, Per Karlsson, said last week that the Elitserien’s ban “can be repealed.”
Earlier this month, the Competition Authority made a similar decision in connection to the second-tier Allsvenskan, and clubs in that league have been signing locked-out N.H.L. players ever since, including the Los Angeles star Anze Kopitar.
Now the door is open in the Elitserien (often not quite accurately referred to as the Swedish Elite League in North American news reports), and ready to walk through it to Frolunda Gothenburg are three big-time N.H.L. stars: Henrik Lundqvist, Erik Karlsson and Loui Eriksson.
The supertrio, as Eurosport Sweden calls the three ex-Frolunda players(translation here), have been talking to the club in anticipation of the Competition Authority decision. Lundqvist, the Rangers’ goalie, won last season’s Vezina Trophy; the Senators defenseman Karlsson is the Norris Trophy holder; and the Stars forward Eriksson is an N.H.L. All-Star.
About 60 locked-out N.H.L. players have agreed to or signed overseas contracts, less than a week into the work stoppage. In 2004-5, almost 400 N.H.L. players played overseas.

I'll have to get my hockey fix from overseas - no biggie though because it looks like there are going to be a huge influx of big names going over there. ----I'm glad that I have no cap on my internet bandwidth

I'm using it to help me cap Euro-hockey & wanted to share it with other folks who are doing the same (I'm also 'Jonesing' for my favorite sport...).

If you see me missing anything or find any errors, please let me know so I can keep everything up to date.

    Cheers

If a deal gets done do these guys get out of their european contracts and come back to nhl immediately to resume contract there?

From what I've read, most of the full season contracts have an escape clause that allows them to leave if an agreement is reached. I have also read about others that are supposed to be month-to-month (they would probably have some type of escape clause as well, but I'm not certain).

Even if there were some type of agreement signed tomorrow, they would still need to have some type of training camp, mini pre-season for the teams to get their shit together. I'd figure at least 2 possibly 3 weeks.

ok. What if a deal gets done, but its because the players cave? will the players want to play in europe instead? I don't know what the pay is like over there. Are we sure that all those nhl players over in europe will come back to nhl if deal is signed?

I would hope so. but there is a lot of players leaving. Even if we get back 80% of them, thats still a fair amount of players missing.

IMHO, I would think that the majority of the players come back as the NHL does pay the best & is the most prestigious league to play in.

The KHL is the next best league & many teams are quite wealthy and can afford to pay much closer to NHL scale. Other leagues, not so much. I don't pretend to know all the contracts but for the higher salaried players, getting insurance is very $$$. In the Swiss league where Jason Spezza is playing, it is costing him around 46K for monthly insurance (he makes about 7M per year so this is like a gym membership).

    OCT 6th story

    Ilya Bryzgalov - G - Flyers

Ilya Bryzgalov joined the discussion of Russian-born players possibly staying in the KHL depending on what happens when a new CBA is agreed upon.

He said to a Russian interviewer, "I think some of the players may not return to the NHL because you have everything here and major companies are going to pay the top players here big money. And, especially for Russians players who can play at home in front of their own fans and families and [earn] even bigger money than they have in the National Hockey League. The KHL can't feed all the players, but for some big players - especially those with Russian passports - it might be a threat." Bryzgalov also said that the owners need to take responsibility for their actions. He cited the long-term deals that some players received prior to the old CBA expiring as an example of them creating their own their problems.
