~SBR 16 Man 4 Month Tournament~
OK Guys - continue to send back your confirmations to me. Here are the rules myself and suicideking have come up with. Lets all do well, as i've tried to construct this towards the weighted gambling approach that i love to use. With the rules in place, these plays should mirror what you are actually wagering each day. Win or lose, this contest should teach you all about the beauty of weighted gambling with sound money management (no chasing).
- the contest will run month to month, with round 1 being from Monday 5/11 until Thur 6/11. 6/12 will be left open for tiebreaker games and setting up the next round - with the next round starting 6/13.
- Each player will have a starting bankroll of 60 units, and you must make a minimum of 50 plays for the round (no max). however, each day you can only play 15% of your starting bankroll for the day. ie, if you have 30 units going into a day, you may only wager 4.5 units for that day which can be broken up however you choose. This will eliminate chasing, and will hopefully help us all use better proper money management techniques for our real world wagers.
- ****Since we have no official score keeper, it is up to you to keep track of your record AND your opponents. This will be our only obstacle for having a clean tourney, so pay attention to the following rules. Each day, both of the participants should be noting the results of the prior day, along with the net total bankroll (do it for your opponent as well so you have an extra pair of eyes). If its noticed that the results/lines etc from past days are incorrect, they can obviously should corrected at any time. However that will not have an affect on any units bet on games after that (the 15% daily limit). If the results from the prior day are posted correctly, however a player goes over the 15% limit for the day, the opponent (or any other sbr member) has until the next days first pitch to report the error. If reported in time, ALL BETS made that day are cancelled for the person who broke the 15% rule.
- all lines will be the opening consensus from sbr (far left), and plays must be posted 5 minutes before the start time of the first day game/night game (anything before 6:00 eastern is considered a day game) ie, if the first game is at 1:05 eastern, the plays for all afternoon games must be posted by NO LATER then 1pm. Night games will be considered anything that starts at 6pm eastern and forward. So for a normal night with 7:05 first pitch, those plays for all night game (including west coast) must be in by 7:00. a lot can happen in the first few at bats, so make sure these picks are in on time.
- all bets must be for the full game and can consist of moneyline, runlines or totals. No reverse run lines.
- we will be betting the team, not the pitcher - so a late scratch of the pitcher stands unless you cancel the bet prior to first pitch (here you can cancel a west coast game if your pitcher is scratched)
- no posts can be edited
- ML = moneyline - RL = run line. When betting a total, make sure you assign the proper money line per SBR. On the totals, over/under section – you will see a total mentioned with a 2 moneylines next to it. The top moneyline is if you take the over, the bottom is if you take the under.
- If there happens to be a tie after 6/11 has concluded. Each player will have to make 5 picks on 6/12, all for 1 unit each. If that doesn’t end the tie, then the same thing the next day, and so on.

with us having to keep score of our own match, very simple math for those that arent great with numbers. to figure out how much you or your opponent is allowed to bet each day, do the following:
.15 x 60 (or whatver the units are coming into that day) = 9 units
so on day 1, we can all bet up to 9 units (to win) in any combination of plays

i cant edit the above, so as i think of other rules (or changes) i will post them here.
*once you are down to 0 units, you have lost the match.

How precise are we being with available bankroll? Are we going to round to the nearest unit? 0.5 unit?
I'm putting the finishing touches on a spreadsheet built from the one I used for you and shoebox's competition. It's formatted to keep track of as many as 20 people at a time, and very easy to use for anyone that wants to use it to double check their math. It will also provide more detailed stats on how each person is doing in the competition for those interested.

or rather, I meant the funds available to wager each day. say on day 2, a bettor is sitting at a bankroll of 61 units. 15% = 9.15 units. To what level should i round that off? Or leave it to 2 decimal places?

forget about the spreadsheet - let each participant keep track of their own stuff. this is simple math.
i guess anything below .50 would be the lower unit (ie 9.15 means you're allowed to bet 9 units) and anything above .50 (ie, 9.7 means you're allowed to bet 10 units)
what do you think?

sounds good. rounding to the nearest 1 unit.
I'll post the sheet anyways. It's done and is a time saver in keeping track of opponents. Then anyone that wants it can use it for their own purposes.

Excel Spreadsheet Tournament Tracker
For anyone that's interested, I've built a tournament excel spreadsheet for the challenge. Basically, it will do all the work for you in keeping track of your bets. All you have to do is feed in the basic bet information (Bettor Name, Date, Team, Bet Type, Price, Wager size, Result), and it will keep all the records.
The workbook has 3 pages.
Place Your Bets
- This page is where you enter all basic bet information. All names must be entered exactly as they appear in the list at the right to be counted. Also, at the bottom right of this page, in the box labelled Team Report, you can enter your name (as it appears in the list above) to see a more detailed breakdown on the Daily Report tab.
Summary
- This tab is locked so it's read-only. It will show you the running stats for each bettor from the start of the competition, including their rank, W-L record, average odds bet (weighted by bet size), details on fave/dog bets, and other stats that will give you more information on how you're actually doing.
Daily Report
- For the Bettor selected in the Team Report box on the Daily Report tab, you'll see a daily breakdown for that bettor. This tab is also locked.
__________________________________
So basically, I built this for myself so I can minimize the time I spend on tracking my own plays/stats during the tournament, and spend that time capping games instead. Expanding it to record everyone's bets was simple, but the data entry part is the problem. I don't really want to be the score keeper for this one, but this sheet gives you everything you need to keep score very efficiently. So if anyone wants to step up to serve as the official scorekeeper, this would make the job quite easy. (Just tedious from the data entry)
The only caveat is that it was produced in (and depends upon) functions from Excel 2007, so for it to work correctly, you need MS Office 2007. The file is attached as an .xls file, but is actually an .xlsx file. The forum won't let me attach the .xlsx file, so you'll need to change the file extension manually to .xlsx and open it with Excel 2007.
If the file doesn't work for some reason, or you can't download it, just PM me with your email address and I'll send a copy your way.
I'm getting stoked for this thing. Ready to go!

Suicideking,
I was dabbling with your spreadsheet but when I tried to run a sample report in the "Daily Report" tab, excel said it was a "read only" file and can only be changed with a password. Can you repost the link without it being a read-only file.

I can do it a little later today. Just on my way out. I actually want to make a couple small changes to the spreadsheet. The tab is locked because you don't need to do anything on that page. On the "Place Your Bets" tab, enter your name in cell J25 and the formulas will take care of the rest.
Currently it will only display results for games on May 11 onwards, specific to this competition. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but i'm going to revise that Enter dates after May 11 and it should work fine. If you want to play with it yourself, the password is: bigdog, but I'll get the revised sheet out today.

Or enter "=J7" in cell J25. The big thing is the formatting. Your name in column A for each bet has to be identical to how it's listed in column J or it won't count those games.

So based on 30 days per round, plus one tiebreak day, the start/end dates for the rounds are:
May 11 - June 9, June 10 tiebreaker
June 11 - July 10, July 11 tiebreaker
July 12 - August 10, August 11 tiebreaker
August 12 - September 10, September 11 tiebreaker

Tournament Tracker v2
So I made some changes to the sheet. I've added individual summary sheets for each round and a select date tab where you can view your bets for any range you want.
To use this sheet, all you need to do is:
On the PLACE YOUR BETS tab,
1) enter your name in cell J25 as it appears in the list above.
2) enter the date range you wish to view in cells J26 & J27.
3) Enter all bet information on the PLACE YOUR BETS tab (name must be identical to how it is written on the list)
The spreadsheet does everything else for you. Date range can be changed any time, and if you're tracking more than one person's scores, you can modify the detailed report any time by changing the name in J25 (see above)
All other sheets are password protected so no one accidentally messes up the calculations in the cells. If, however, you're confident in your excel abilities and want to play around with it, the password is bigdog.
Good Luck guys.

In response to a private message with a question about what units represent,
One unit bet on a -110 fave would mean betting 1.1 units to win 1 unit. Alternately, a 1 unit bet on a +120 dog means betting one unit to win 1.2 units. Sorry if that wasn't clarified in the main thread.
Additionally, this competition is baseball only. All lines are taken as the opening lines on SBR, and the only valid plays are ML, RL, and Totals. No RRLs or parlays allowed.
Feel free to send any additional questions to me or Dexter

Oops... Sorry. I mentioned when I posted the first version, but not the second.. To allow me to send it through the forum, I needed to change the extension from .xlsx (office 2007) to .xls. If you manually change it back the file should open up just fine. If that doesn't work PM me youe email address and I'll send you a copy.

additionally, the 15% rule pertains to just your units bet for that day - meaning its not based on *potential* returns (from underdogs) or *potential* losses from favorites.
ie....you have 9 units to bet today.
4x mets -200
2x giants -150
3x cards +180
*note how im not factoring the line into my 9 units allowed for the day. hope thats clear.

Added Rule - if a game is called for rain (but if *official* after 5 inn) we will only count the side and not the total. the total is a push regardless if you're over got there, or if you're under lost.
