Default books on betting

What are some good books on the "basics" of betting, and just basic strategy and odds?

There's a lot of bad stuff written on the subject, and a little good.

Mason Malmuth: "Gambling Theory and Other Topics". Arguably, the best gambling book ever written. Thinking about this made me realize that Ganchrow has enough, or close to that, outstanding material for a book of his own.

Hey, Ganchrow, just put together all those articles as Mason did with his Poker Essays. What do you say?

There are some good books about the basics, but they don't show you how to win. A guy who makes a lot of money gambling isn't going to write a book about how he's doing it. Not going to happen.

Third party books, about the best gamblers and investors, are where most useful information is at. The next best thing to hanging out with the very best in the business is to have someone interview or study the very best for you.

The winning investment habits of Warren Buffett & George Soros by Mark Tier.

In the end it's all about right or wrong habits.

Most gambling books fall short of the educating the true facts of life.. Exerperiece is better. Play small, develope a style that works for you. I've read most of Sanford Wong's material. Its useful in helping understanding the math side of gaming. The tournament blackjack book is the best. "Guerilla Gambling" is an interesting mind set to learn while somewhat limited in content. Yet I would still add it to the list of books to read. Any book on the lives of famous gamblers is another way to learn the bigger picture as to the nature of the beast.

Data, you seem like a smart dude so I respect your opinon, but I cannot understand why the Mason book is even decent!
Basically, the only thing he says in the book is that it is good to vary your bet size (hello Kelly!) and that he is sooooooo good.
Can you please explain what you found useful?

My recommendation of books:
- Sharp Sports betting (wong)
- Gambling Wizards (Munchkin)
- Fixed Odds Sports Betting (Buchdahl)

the_fredrik, I found it interesting how the author goes beyond sizing the bets and illustrates how non-self-weighting strategies can be applied to solve real life problems. Then, "Building Pyramids" opened up my eyes on how to become a big winner.

I'm ashamed to say that although I've read many books on poker, I've never read a book on sportsbetting.

Would you recommend this book as a first read Justin? I'm not a total square who knows nothing but I'm wondering if this book may be too advanced.

The best I found by far are Wong and Yeo's books.

For an advanced read I thought Dan Gordon's "beat the sportsbook" was a good read. It gives you an Idea of how to use ratings in your handicapping. It also gives you a good understanding of how the spread is made up and how past spreads affects future ones.
