This is the biggest problem with per:

Given these values, with a bit of math we can show that a player will break even on his two point field goal attempts if he hits on 30.4% of these shots. On three pointers the break-even point is 21.4%. If a player exceeds these thresholds, and virtually every NBA played does so with respect to two-point shots, the more he shoots the higher his value in PERs. So a player can be an inefficient scorer and simply inflate his value by taking a large number of shots.
That and the fact that it doesn't rate defense very well.

it's too bad defensive stops are not recorded by the nba, this would allow for a more complete assessment of a players defensive abilities

Very fun tool but very little value in capping.

This is just fun with numbers. Show me 3 "mathematicians", and I'll show you 4 "efficiency ratings."

You should be more upset with official lunacy, re: NFL "Quarterback Ratings". Now that is criminal.

    Here's the formula: Game Score=(pointsx1.0)+(FGMx0.4)+(GAx-0.7)+ ((FTA-FTM)x-0.4) +(OREBx0.7)+(DREBx0.3)+(STLx1.0)+(ASTx0. 7)+(BLKx0.7)+(PFx-0.4)+
    (TOx-1.0)^5

    where FGM=field goals made FGA=field goals attempt FTA=Free throws att FTM=free throws made OREB= off rebounds DREB=def rebounds STL=steals AST=assists BLK=blocks PF=personal fouls TO=turnovers

two math guys were eating lunch talking about how sad it is that no one kows math anymore. When one went to the head the other one told the waitress 'when my buddy comes back I'll ask you a question and you answer ... x squared' So when he came back and the other asked the waitress 'what's the integral of 2x?' ... she replied, 'x squared plus a constant'
