Default Info on buying points? NBA

I thought there was an article on here before that talked about buying points (3) in a NBA game. If someone has it please post again. I want to see what the REAL value is for buying points compared to not buying them. Thank You

If you find a book that offers value for buying points, please let me (us) know.
That being said, on Matchbook you can get some better deals of course if they have different spreads.

It is almost never worthwhile to buy points in NBA except for the few shops that allow you to buy 3 points at -170.

Use the 1/2 point calculator and find out at which spreads this will give you an edge.

I've tried it before and I can only find my edge when buying 1 1/2 points either way. Once I move the arrows in the bottom box to go up or down, everything gets out of whack.

when you toggle its still ok its just showing you the equivalent price at the different spreads. When you get to the spread you want put in the -170 and see how it compares to the existing price.

For me, it's changing the numbers in the top box when I toggle.

Yes, and thats ok its just toggling through all the equivalent prices at the present spread with respect to the initial spread and price you entered. For the purposes of this comparison just focus on the bottom section. Get to the the spread you are buying to and compare the -170 price to the equivalent price listed for that spread.

Then do me a favor. Using a 9 pt NBA spread at -110, tell me what adding 3 pts to the dog at -170 gives you. Are you getting a -.056% dog edge?

Yes, thats what I get. A better bet but not enough of a benefit to overcome the -110 vig.

Buying points in NBA is not a good betting proposition. You're paying MORE juice while 2-3 points difference won't matter VERY OFTEN on the long run. Yes, sometimes it will save your ass but not often as you think.

What about selling points? You can find very valuable odds in Matchbook because Public likes to buy points. If the line is 207, you can get Over 209 instead of 207 at very generous odds..

You can use the half-point calculator to determine value of selling points too, and I agree it is a good move a lot of times and often a GREAT move with totals.

As for buying, again I would only recommend that if you can buy 3 for -170. If so, certain subsets have been historically +EV.

It's all about Matchbook anyway, you can find value there on spreads/totals that have been moved down.
Don't bother looking for it at the real books, just my 2c.

I teased the Lakers down to -1/2 pt against the Bucks this week and it paid off when Kobe hit the game winner, I saw many teased them down to only -4 or -3. When I strongly believe a team will win I'll tease down to that -1/2 to insure a payout if they win instead of possibly losing money on a -4 or -3 if they still win.

It seems that VIP now allows you to sell points, I'm not sure what they are paying for them, but they just sent me an e-mail announcing it

    Last but not Least……

Our newest feature at VIP.com – Reverse Point Buys, a.k.a. Point Sells! If you are feeling extra confident in your pick, you can now reduce the point spread and get paid out more when you win!

i only buy 1.5 pts max for -140....then atleast i cant bitch if they dont cover cause I bought the edge. I know I am losing money on that vig though so its normally parlayed/.

I'm making money on NBA primarily because I can take a -2.5 instead of -1.5 or get +5 instead of +6 etc. The same goes for College Hoops. Out of my last 100 NCAA bets I've won about 58 at (106) and have only had 3 games which I lost due to buying the point (Kansas State last night winning by 5 instead of 5.5 and 2 a couple weeks ago)

This seems to be the way to go in my opinion.

Unfortunately, I don't think it has been in over about two years, as it was Ganchrow's baby.
