Anyone know the name of a movie made in the late 80s: it was a satire on US middle class life/gluttony etc. and had scenes where people were eating each other (like a dinner) - consuming each others naked flesh - all very gross and plenty of latex effects.

It was not exactly a horror movie and not exactly popular the box office IIRC.

I thought of that (The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover). It is a movie most famous in my mind for Helen Mirren's sex scenes and full frontal nudity. Extremely hot - and she must have been into her 50's by then.

But it doesn't really fit the OP's description. Like, only in a very indirect way. They did cook one guy - the "lover" - but this never happened:

"had scenes where people were eating each other (like a dinner)."

But maybe OP was remembering the details wrong. It had a fair bit of other gross stuff like when the wife and her lover are hiding in a truck full of rotting meat and fish.

Definitely British. Directed by Peter Greenaway. Starred Mirren and Michael Gambon and Tim Roth.
