If I had things my way
Allison Iraheta +1500
“Cry Baby” by Janis Joplin
We learn right away that Allison got her hair rocked out by Adam Lambert’s hairdresser, and I must say it looks fantastic! So there you have it. I write about American Idol and I critique girls’ hair and I feel no dire need to re-evaluate myself whatsoever! When she reveals to Slash that she will be doing a Joplin song, he says “Far out” or some other two word sentence. Thanks for the help there buddy!
The fact is that Allison can pull off Joplin as well as just about anybody. I thought it was the best song of the evening, but the judges were tough on her. I don’t get it, but given my fortunes with baseball tonight, I don’t think I’ll ever get it. I do think she will be safe.
Idol is getting wild and crazy tonight by throwing in a couple of rock duets. First up are Kris Allen and Danny Gokey performing “Renegade” by Styx. I have never been more serious in my life when I tell you that this duet had me silently screaming “whatever.” A raging indifference took me over, if that makes any sense at all.
“Come Together” by The Beatles
I don’t know about coming together, but Allen fell apart tonight. He didn’t do so great in the duet and this song was terrible as well. Simon compared it to “eating ice for lunch.” I LOL’d at that. Rock is certainly not Kris’ thing. The sad part is that I personally think that the next guy should go home instead, but Allen is lagging behind him a bit in the popularity contest, so I fear this could be the end of the road for him.
Back before the constant beer trickle shredded my vocal chords, I used to sing this song all the time. I would break it out at parties, or at karaoke. Women would send over the waitress with drinks for me before I was 21. I used to nail it, which is weird because I’ve never done much singing. These days my throat laughs hysterically at me when I attempt to hit that famous high-pitched note for more than two seconds. But I used to.
That’s why I got a good laugh when Gokey took a shot at it. He sounded like me if I was singing it in another 30 years. I would love to see him go home so badly. His time is almost up either way, but man it would be great to see him go home tonight.
The second duet joined the diabolical forces of Iraheta and Lambert. I immediately rattled off about 15 songs that I thought would compliment both of them very well. Then they did “Slow Ride” by Foghat. Really? That’s the best they could come up with? It still sounded OK but I found it to be the perfect mediocre ending to a rather non-eventful night.
Is this really considered rock?
