Interesting to say the least really considering Duke fired their head coach not to long ago. Could Spurrier actually go back to where it all started for him? ...I don't think he would at all considering the contract he has with South Carolina.

DURHAM, N.C. -- A familiar name from Duke's football past was on campus

Wednesday: Steve Spurrier.

The South Carolina coach was at Cameron Indoor Stadium meeting with athletic director Joe Alleva, two days after the Blue Devils fired coach Ted Roof.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that Spurrier was seen shaking hands with the AD as they left Duke's primary athletic facility at around 3:20 p.m.

A school spokesman told the Associated Press the two are old friends. Earlier this week, Alleva said he planned to consult with Spurrier during his search for a replacement for Roof, who went 6-45 in four-plus seasons leading the Blue Devils.

Spurrier was 20-13-1 from 1987-89 at Duke, leading the school to its most recent Atlantic Coast Conference title in 1989 before leaving for his alma mater, Florida. He often speaks of his fondness for Duke, voting the Blue Devils No. 25 on his preseason ballot in the coaches' Top 25 as a thank you for his first chance to become a head coach.

Alleva said he would like to hire someone with major college head coaching experience within a month to rebuild a Duke program that hasn't won an ACC game since 2004.

He is more likely helping Duke with an executive search for a new head coach.

It is not unusual for an organization to bring in a consultant to help with finding people for top positions.

Looks like Spurrier didn't want it or even had interest in the Duke job.

I think this was a great hire for Duke, because Cutcliffe got a raw deal down there at Ole Miss. As soon as Eli left he got fired for not having enough time to reload his offense.

Tennessee assistant head coach David Cutcliffe has agreed in principle to become the next football coach at Duke, sources with knowledge of the situation said Friday.

It is expected that Cutcliffe will be announced as Blue Devils coach in the next few days and will be introduced at a Monday news conference in Durham, N.C. Cutcliffe will remain with Tennessee through the Volunteers' bowl game.

Citing sources in the Vols program, the Knoxville News-Sentinel reported on its Web site early Friday that Cutcliffe was expected to accept the post.

At media day before the Vols' Outback Bowl matchup with Wisconsin, Cutcliffe said he had not been offered the job at Duke. He declined to take any questions about the vacancy, but acknowledged he interviewed for the job.

Longtime NFL assistant coach Hue Jackson, currently the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, interviewed for the vacancy on Friday. Duke.

Duke has been looking for a new coach since Nov. 26, when the school fired Ted Roof after a 1-11 record in 2007 and a 6-45 mark in five seasons.

Lets face facts... The Blue Devils will always be a hoops school. I think the Duke Alumni would be thrilled just to get back to respectability, and get a bowl bid.

You're 100% correct. And Ole Miss has found out since they fired Cutcliffe just how big a mistake they made.
