Default WOW how important are QB's

3 QB's go down this week and their teams fall flat on their faces. Some preety bad back ups. Killed Oregon and now Oklahoma's BCS hopes.

The QB is the single most important position in sports, except maybe the goalie in hockey. More important than a starting pitcher, more important than a basketball center.

NFL teams don't use their backups properly, so very few players who are high caliber will tolerate being a backup. If you were a great athlete and you knew you could be a backup QB and get blisters in your backside, or you could be a wide receiver or a cornerback and play every day, what would you do?

I have always thought that QBs should be brought in and out of games depending on the situation, since each QB has a different set of skills. I remember when the Oakland Raiders had a backup QB by the name of Blanda. His specialty was the hurry up offense and the long ball. He rescued five games in a row from certain defeat, coming in off the bench.

Perhaps it isn't feasible to bring in different QBs for different situations, I don't see that many teams doing it.

    West Virginia at South Florida

    Oregon at Arizona

    Oklahoma at Texas Tech

Lose your starting QB and you probably lose the ballgame.

yep, college and pros. Shows why offensive lines are so important and teams just dismiss them like the trash (ala, Az Cardinals).

Tell me about it. I had both Oregon and OU. Both teams were looking very good prior to the injuries, which really sucks. Frustrating when you feel like you capped them right and then that happens. Oh well

thanks Curious, but I was talking about College teams. in college because guys are only their 4 years or less, most teams always are/have a back-up that is developing to take over the reigns.
i know UofL's back-ups are quality, they could start on most Div-1 teams.
but back to the main point, i think this thread was started because of the handful of top teams(college) who have fell apart this season in a game when their starting QB has went down.

Why would you post a comment about college teams in the college footballl handicapping? LOL Sorry, I have a bad habit of clicking on new posts and not reading the name of the forum. LOL

Anyway, for college teams I think the problem is the way they do practices. The starter gets most of the snaps, runs most of the drills.

If I were running a practice, I would split the players up half and half starters and backups into two groups and run full practice for each, so that all the starters and all the backups get a full practice. But, of course I'm not a football coach so what the hell do I know?

I agree with you all.....I do could not see why the OK quarter back came out, that hit did not look that bad and on top of that he is wearing a helmet so how bad could it have been?

Oregon was a different team when the QB went down, and was shocked to find out about OU until I realized that the QB was injured.

Injuries, turnovers and questionable officiating are handicapping killers..........
