Default Memphis Coach Tommy West On Being Fired

This is just the first step....Memphis hired former Big East commisioner Mike Trangesse to head up a panel focusing on ways to get Memphis into the Big East....B.E. football has been looking for a 9th member since the ACC raped us 4 years ago...That way all Big East teams could automatically have 4 home conference games a year and no longer be the only major conference with only 8 teams....I guarantee this was a decision made under advisement, and is the first of many steps taken in order to get Memphis into the Big East.....

Then again... I would like WVU to hire a guy who lays it out like this..... Pussyfootin and beating around the bush have become commonplace with our program and I would love to see a Tommy West come here and lay shit down like that.......

He was close to a meltdown. He should have learned from Calipari how to cheat.

'not a good day at the office'

love how he calls the fans out. real classy exit.

'dont be negative. ask what you can you do to help the team? call me, and ask 'coach, how can i help ya?''

If the Big East wants to improve their conference, the first thing they can do is swap USF to the ACC for Boston College. One would think that a move like tht would be a natural for both conferences. Where the Big East has really hung themselves is with their hoops conference, which stretches over some 16 teams, 7 of which do not play FBS football, and the 8th, being Notre Dame, who is technically an independent. How many more teams can they take on?

B.C. was originally in the big east, doubt they're going back. Also you bring up an already loaded big east basketball schedule how would adding B.C. make that any better. They need to add 1 more team for football so at least they can have balanced schedules within the division. Can more teams be like N.D.? (sorry i'm being lazy, don't wanna look up myself) Can they belong to one conference for say football and another for basketball purposes?

I do not know of any other team that falls into that catagory in football and hoops, though there is no rules specifically stating what schools can or can not do regarding sports and conferences. Basically it is up to the conferences, and with the exception of Notre Dame and the Big East, I do not know of any conference that will allow a team to participate in football in their conference and hoops in another conference.

He's an idiot and not a very football coach. Of course he did make some good points but that doesn't change the fact he got fired for sucking.

Do you think he knew that BEFORE he took the job? And he took it anyway? Why didn't he resign years ago if it was so bad? Again, he sounded like a loser.

konck, the guy only made a little over 900k yearly salary. memphis fans are the first to jump on and off the bandwagon here. they never pay attention to the true lack of talent we have and place all the blame on the coaching. its the way its always been. the best local talent we have, we lose to the bigger schools. the talent that sticks around can barely make grades and would rather do thug shit than practice and play ball. it wont change. it simply doesnt matter who we bring in to coach. the program is never going to be any good and whoever comes in next is going to take the same abuse from the fans and the media.

besides giving money to the program, wth does he want people and the memphis school newspaper to do? coaches recruit and build programs, not the public and not school newspapers

hoopster, for a kid in school, you arent very bright pal. if the media keeps pounding the program with shit story after shit story about how bad they are and all the problems going on, who in the hell wants to go play football there? even the best recruiters cant compete with the shit the media starts around here. i guess you guys would need to see how bad the team gets ripped by the paper and tv news segments. you would think that they are trying to bury the program. never a good word. never anything positive. its always negative things about all the mistakes the players are making in the games. even when they win, the news focuses more on the flaws and what they need to improve. you havent seen this program getting any media praise since deangelo left.

nobody wants to go play football for a team when all they hear is bad things about the program. the media here has played a big role in turning talent away. who would want to take a chance at coming to memphis and play great, yet have the media point out more of the negatives than positives. that hurts players chances of going to the nfl. Deangelo was the exception because he was the best player in the entire conference. as soon as he was gone and the team quit going to bowl games, the media picked up right where they left off with the bashing of the program.

people ask "if west was so unhappy, why didnt he leave?" cus the guy was making over 900k with country club memberships and other things that he loved. plus, who else is gonna pay him that much?

i don't live anywhere near memphis, thank God. anyways, i don't read the memphis papers online buy i guaran-fukken-tee you that negativity of different degrees goes on all over the country for most or all of the college football programs in FBS. yet, you only think it hurts memphis recruiting? win more bowl gms and maybe kids will wana go there. west says they can't compete w/conf usa, as if it's some really tough conf or something. there is no dominant program in conf usa. it is an avg conf and memphis has no reason not to be more competitive than they have been under west the last 9 yrs. he's just not a very good coach, which is why clemson didn't keep him around and no one other than memphis wanted him when he left clemson
