Default Brian Kelly to Notre Dame?

Rivals Radio, ESPN, and GW are now all reporting that ND is talking to Kelly through third parties to gauge their interest.

Kelly would be the first competent coach ND has hired since Lou Holtz.

If ND loses to Pitt this weekend, I could see a resignation of Weis coming shortly thereafter.

Do you really think an ego-maniac like Weis would resign under any circumstance? I seriously doubt it. NOt with that buyout clause.

I think Weis will go peacefully.

For a lot of reasons. ND will give him a fair amount of cash, and ND has provided Weis with a great deal of alumni support for his "Hannah and Friends" farm/living facility near South Bend. Weis won't go postal for that reason alone. The family has a lot vested in that, and alienating ND's support wouldn't be the smartest move.

My god, Gerry Faust is now loved on ND's campus. If Faust can pull it off, Weis can too.

Interestinglly, the ESPN report had Weis resigning for "health reasons" and being moved into a support position in the athletic department.

Nobody really knows but ND will never fire a coach in the middle of the regular season.

Hi Tim. How are you doing? You are absolutely right. Notre Dame will allow Weis to finish the seaon. Weis will not resign during the season. Notre Dame is going to have to fork over some big bucks to get rid of him, but they can get Kelley for 1.5 million and save themselves some of that money. Cincinnati can not afford to pay that kind of money to a head coach.

Until Willingham, they had always given coaches 5-years. Even Faust got 5 years, as did Davie.

    There are firsts for everything.

More, the reports on Rivals indicated that Weis was given an ultimatum---10 wins or out. So, while he may not be technically "fired", he may know he is gone.

    For 8 more weeks, tops.

No way Kelly is staying in Cincinnati for the long term.

I'm good BD--was better before the Navy loss--but still doing well. We miss you at the other place, the CFB forum is dead. I don't even check in that much. I also had a little run in with the king mod over there this weekend, and there's still some tension.

There is no way Weis will be fired during the season. Swarbrick doesn't even review the programs (every sport) until the seasons are over so that isn't even within the realm of possibility. I really don't think money is that big of an issue for ND, we weathered the financial storm better than almost every other university for various reasons, so we're not in bad shape there. Kelly has certainly done some impressive things at UC, but I'm not looking forward to all the decommitments, transfers, Clausen and Tate going pro, etc. should Weis be fired. But it is becoming increasingly clear that he isn't getting the job done -- 2 losses to Navy in 3 years is unacceptable. Navy isn't some FCS school for sure, they are a very respectable program but Notre Dame should not lose to Navy. Never.

That is not INSIDE information. It's common knowledge. If ND doesnt win out then Kelly will be the new coach.

I would not go so far at to say that it is common knowledge, but if Notre Dame loses another game, Weis is in huge trouble. Notre Dame does not fire coaches until the season is complete. That includes bowl games. With the very real possibility of Cincinnati going to a BCS game, and the lock that Notre Dame is going to some bowl game, this issue will remain a hot topic until next year.

BDQH has it right. Everyone always claims to have inside knowledge when it comes to ND but really no one does.
