Default Pitt Panthers @ Rutgers Scarlet Knights Thoughts

Line jumped from 3 to 5.5-6 yesterday. Public clearly loving the Pitt Panthers and with good reason. Pitt has played a much tougher schedule than Rutgers. While the beatdown Cincy put on Rutgers to start the season doesn't look as bad now, Rutgers hasn't really done anything to impress since with lackluster wins over subpar opponents. However, the weeknight dog at home always has to be considered. Leaning Pitt right now but if this line keeps moving, may jump on the Knights bandwagon. Thoughts?

renojoe: Just wondering what your reasoning for thinking Rutgers has a chance is. Is there something I'm missing?

Pitt's run defense has been pretty good this year so I think if Rutgers is going to win, they will have to have success throwing the ball. Pitt's starting cornerback Aaron Berry has a shoulder injury so Rutgers may be able to take advantage of that match-up. The downside to that is Rutger's QB, Savage, is young and inexperienced. Even with favorable match-ups, I'm not sure he will be able to deliver the ball. Rutgers run defense has been stout as well according to the numbers which may be a little skewed based on their schedule so far. If Rutgers can stop Lewis and force Stull to beat them through the air, I think Rutgers can keep it tight.

Yeah I think that's the main issue saltwatercowboy....Rutgers statistics mean nothing at this point because theyve played the weakest schedule in football. That's why the only game I think is comparable is Cincy @ Rutgers. It was still a home game against another Big East team, and frankly that was absolutely embarrassing for Rutgers. It looks to me like they put together a schedule that would guarantee a bowl game after all the money theyve put into that program recently haha

Pitt seems to be the obvious play, but that coaching staff really puts the breaks on everything. These guys make nail biters out of routs. Wanny is 0-4 S/U against Rutgers. How they lost to N.C. State, the team that has put Duke back on the football map, boggles the mind. On paper, Pitt should win this game, but then there is that coaching problem.....Pass

Agree DbleDown11. We will find out a lot about Rutgers tonight and see what kind of football team they are. Pitt seems to play to the level of the competition regardless of who it is. Makes me want to lean to the points but hard to shake off how awful they looked to open the year against the Bearcats.

    Film notes:

    • RU's O-line shuffling and wholesale lack of execution has seemed to dampen any hope of having some consistency against PITT's front-7. The unit's play has been somewhat abysmal, with almost no push made against the opposition. There is little-to-no-chance that, from their former D-lineman playing guard to their RT, a semblance of a crease will be found. TX-Southern's interior players actually walked RU's two guards back on a few occasions. Maryland fvcked this unit up for 3 quarters in a bad way.
    • PITT has a few injuries in its secondary, but with wind probably being the most important caveat in weather-capping in full-effect for tonight, I don't see Tom Savage being able to make PITT look as foolish against a unit now lacking Tiquan Underwood and Kenny Britt.
    • RU has a sophisticated defense and a lot of speed, but they get really gassed more so than most undersized units when having to deal with leaning on larger players. This should come into effect more noticeably in a game like tonight's where the passing game will be quite diminished.
    • In Byham and Hynoski, PITT has the personnel to set the edge easily in their base packages.

    PITT -5.5 / Under 44.5

The total dips from 50 to 45.5 with 56% on the over. This smells fishy.

If you watched the Cinncy/Rutgers game early in the season you should know who to bet on...
