Default UFC 94: Penn vs GSP

This is it guys: BJ Penn vs GSP 2! This is quite possibly the most excited I've been to watch a fight. Two of the UFC's biggest stars, and future hall of famers going at it for the second time.

HERE'S THE QUESTION (two parts):
1) Who do you want to win?
2) Who are you betting on?

Give me some insight into why you're making your bet too.

So, my heart is with GSP on this one. I'm canadian, and I love to watch GSP fight. He's got monsterous strength and has been able to outwrestle all of his opponents. We've seen him rise and fall twice: in his first fight to Hughes, and again in his first fight to Serra. GSP is a smart fighter and an incredible athlete.

However, in terms of betting, I've been putting a lot of thought into this one and I'm almost completely sure that I'm betting on BJ Penn.
I know they fought a few years ago and Penn lost a split decision. I know that Penn got demolished in his second title fight with Hughes.
But that was the Old BJ Penn. The Old BJ Penn had no cardio; he came into fights out of shape and that's why there's no way he could've won those fights.

But now, we're looking at the best BJ Penn we've ever seen. As he demonstrated in his first fight with GSP, Penn's striking is on a completely different level than GSP's. Skeptics will say that GSP has been training on his boxing too, but he'll still get outboxed by Penn.

BJ Penn has been realized how important it is to have a strong heart; good cardio. If you've taken a look at him recently, you'll see that he's in the best shape of his life. His muscles are much bigger, and his cardio is better than ever. You can bet that his punches will be a lot stronger, and his gas tank will take him farther into the fight.

Finally, Penn has a world of confidence on his shoulders right now. He's demolished his competition; absolutely walked right through them. I've watched all of those fights, and I can conclude that Penn is getting more vicious with every fight.

As for mentality, I think Penn has a stronger mind than GSP. In the past, we've seen GSP confess that he does indeed get scared: he admitted that he was so nervous before his first fight with Hughes that he couldn't even look him in the eye before the fight. Also, GSP admitted that he was scared after his first round against BJ Penn. Penn has the mentality of a fearless warrior, and I think that will go a long way in the octagon when these two square off.

BJ Penn +150 by TKO

I'm not sure what took this thread so long to get started! What an awesome fight this should be. Not sure what my play will be yet.

OMG also on this card...Clay Guida vs. Nate Diaz. I've been waiting for a couple years now to see Diaz lose. Guida is one of my favorite fighters. This HAS to be the time that whiny-voiced bitch finally takes the L. Right? RIGHT!??!?

WEC odds are rarely out early. Sometimes they don't come out until the actual fight night. My guess would be sometime Sat or on Sun the 25th, which is the night of the fight. I'm thinking they don't want the Faber line out yet because everyone and their mother will be betting him huge to destroy Pulver, because he will.

I'm conflicted on who I want to win, Penn or GSP. I would like to see Penn win this fight as I like him better. But I would also like to see GSP fight Anderson Silva, and I think that is more likely to happen if he wins this fight. The winner will be fighting Thiago Alves, no doubt, and I don't really care to see Penn vs Alves. Probably bet Penn.

Well he wasnt too strong the last time they fought. Penn went out drinking and Gsp spent the night in the hospital(shows who really won that fight imo). I wouldn't bet much either way. This will more than likely go to decision again. Unless Bj can knock GSP out, which is possible. But, penn is also just as likely to gas.

Might not be a bad idea too parlay fedor/barnett/penn =2.43/1 and fedor/barnett/gsp 1.29/1 odds. Cause imo penn fight is 50/50.

i've heard the "Penn went out drinking and Gsp spent the night in the hospital" excuse a million times. In the real world Penn won round one and GSP won rounds 2 and 3, thus wining the fight 2 rounds to 1. Penn fans try to rationalize Bj won because GSP looked wose in the end. He looked bad because of

#1 the illegal eye poke that made his whole eye swollen

#2 an uppercut that just caught the tip of GSP's nose and broke it

If you think Penn can win a decision on one good punch that landed on the tip of his nose to cause lots of blood your crazy. Yea GSP went to the hospital because he had a broken nose, and his eye had to be checked out because of BJ's grubby finger.

I think GSP takes this fight either by UD or a stoppage in the fourth or fifth. If BJ is going to win, it's going to happen in the first or second via TKO. In any case, I'll most likely be betting on GSP.

EXACTLY. Any true MMA fan that watched this fight knows that GSP deserved to win. I am a huge GSP fan and have watched his rise to the top of the 170 class. Keep in mind in the 1st fight this was before GSP had experienced what it is like to win a title and lose it in devastating fashion. BJ has improved, but GSP has improved even more since their last fight. I am cheering for GSP and am betting on him. 2-1 odds or under I think is a good bet. BJ will come out strong for sure and I'll admit the first few blows he lands to GSP I will cringe a bit. If BJ comes out throwing bombs expect GSP to take him down immediately and wear out BJ a little and control the pace. Can't wait for this, should be an epic fight.

Your both funny. I suggest you watch the fight again. The eye poke happened 2-3 mins in and had no effect on the fight. GSP had no problem throwing combos and sprawling and ground control. BJ outstriked GSP for most of the fight and more than likely will this one, that is why GSP will try to drag this into the later rounds, because penn will probably gas. GSP would not be wise to stand in this fight, a fine example would be their last fight. Im looking at the fight from a unbias perspective. You guys should give it a try.
And they went out drinking GSP to the hospital, that wouldn't be a excuse. That would be a fact. Looks like we got some GSP fans/Penn haters.
Also, Gsp looked bad because his face got punched all night. Again watch the fight.

The eyepoke had no effect? LOL, you're delusional. GSP was seeing double the whole fight and had one good eye, and that wouldn't effect him? The victory is based on technical points scored, not points scored from damage due to eye pokes and upper cut clips. BJ is a good striker I'll give him that, but he did not win that fight, nor will he win this one. RIP BJ Penn 1/31/09

look i'm a fan of the skill of fighters but bj is taking prefight hype to a low. now he's just being a dick...i know when bj is gonna win and this time he will not. i like the way he fights but he has to talk shit to be confident and that shows his insecurity. it will be a great fight because they both have inproved dramatically and both have new motivation. it will probably come down to who is more technical and stronger.

This site absolutely rocks. They give good insight into fight picks (betting wise).
To sum up their opinion on the GSP-Penn fight, they suggest that GSP has the advantage because he will come in much more prepared than BJ Penn, and that Greg Jackson will put together a good game plan to neutralize any of BJ's threats.

The only criticism I have of the site is that I feel a slight sense of biasism. They do make note of BJ Penn's accomplishments, but I feel that they are underestimating him. Everyone knows GSP is the bigger, stronger fighter, and a better wrestler. The way the article is written conveys the idea that BJ Penn has absolutely no chance of winning, which is where I feel they are wrong.

I stand by my betting prediction that BJ will go for that TKO. He doesn't want to be friends with GSP, he just wants to win. No doubt, GSP will come in with a good game plan, but things don't always go according to plan. In the world of MMA, anything can happen.

Man, I'm so hyped to see this fight. Win or lose, I just hope it's entertaining for us to watch.

I haven't been to that site in a while because of their bias and skewed reasoning. They tend to forgo the negatives of guys they're picking and the positives of the guys they think will lose.

If BJ does win, I can see it happening by TKO. Just hope it happens fast cause if this turns into a war, I don't like BJ's chances when the fight hits the later rounds. I don't care how improved his cardio is, it's still not on the same level as GSP.

My god, it is easy to see that your the one with the "unbias perspective" , give me a break. Maybe before you "suggest you watch the fight again" you take your own advice.

1. The eye poke came in the 1st minute of the fight (4:14 round 1) not 2-3 minutes in. only a retard would think a man fighting 14 minutes of a 15 minute fight with one eye "had no effect in the fight"

2. No kidding it was a "FACT" that GSP went to the hospital. Thats the reason Penn uses it as an EXCUSE. You like to talk about FACT, and the fact of the matter is GSP won rounds 2 and 3, and i suggest YOU watch the fight before coming on here and telling others to do the same. Then you will realize your the biased one all over BJ's nuts

again, another case of someone getting E-motional. Seems like you need some friends or to get out more. And yes, everything I said was from an unbias perspective. Seeing as I didn't bring emotions into it and I am judging the upcoming fights solely based on previous ones.

From what I've seen most of this mma-forum belongs on sherdog

i'm not E-motional at all. Your the one who brings up that BJ went out drinking crap that should be on Shedog. I just enjoy betting on MMA, and like to see the fight scored right whatever side i may be on.

Their first fight was one of the best MMA fights I've ever seen. The rematch should be great.

GSP either wins by decision or Penn by TKO. No way Penn wins a decision. I think Penn is too tough to get TKO'ed and too technically sound to get submitted. Betting the straight up winner, I'm passing. Those odds seem about right.

Alright first off GSP is more well rounded of a fighter then Penn. He has great boxing aswell as the ground game. Penn posesses more power in his punches but GSP is more versitile and will find the angles easily on Penn. You can say oh this is the new BJ Penn well this is the much better and improved GSP. Fights are hard to bet on as well all know it could be over within seconds. I'm going with GSP on this one fellas.
I'm 14-3 in UFC/WEC fights since UFC 91. I took rampage over silva and
Evans over griffin and Mir over nogueeira In ufc 92 which where huge upsets. Took faber over pulver @ -550 odds and let 3500 ride on that as well as a huge payout on the varner fight. Big money on GSP aswell as I'm very confident here as he's clearly the better fighter hands Down

I think the best value play is on Don Hyun Kim at +230 vs Karo Parisyan. Kim is also a expert in Judo so he takes away Karo best skill. This is Karos first fight since he dropped out because of those panic attacks. Also i've read they have a fighter ready to take over in case Karo pulls out last minute again. +230 i'll take that

Now, is this your opinion or the the opinion of Jordan Breen and Performify?

Karo-Kim to go the full 3 rounds -215. This is my strong play for that one.

I think Breen is the one from sherdog that knows all the asian fighters really well. i'm Curious to see if he does take Kim over Karo on the Roundtable later today! As for Performify not sure what that means
