Default Beat The Prick Tie-Breaker...an idea

I have heard some people complain about post count being used as a tie-breaker for weekly prizes. I fall into that camp also. I may only come out on top one week of the season and if I lose out on post-count its a little tough to swallow. The drop from 1st prize of $500 to $200 is steep.

I suppose people could start replying to each and every thread on the board, regardless of whether they have anything intelligent to add or not but I don't think anyone wants to see that. It might be too late to implement but here's an idea...

Make the first tie-breaker the 'uniqueness' of the picks. Since you are tracking how many contestants are picking each game, it shouldn't be that hard to tally. For example...if I am tied with someone at 4-0 for the week and my picks were chosen a combined 50 times versus his that were chosen a combined 25 times then he would come out the winner based on the fact that he chose less popular games and was not just following consensus...ergo a better capper.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the idea Hulu ... and a good one at that. We've already set the rules and programming for this year's contest. However, your idea is worth exploring for next year's Beat The Prick and/or any other contests we may run in the future.

Good luck this season!

Yeah I figured it might be a bit late to implement seeing as how week one picks are already on the board and a change like that may influence one's picks.

However, I reserve the right to bitch loudly if I lose money based on post count. LOL

LOL Hulu!

Well jump on in and post. More than 400 folks in just the Pro Football forum alone, last time I checked. Always room for one more good poster

i don't really like the uniqueness idea

suppose you pick first (your picks would all be unique) but then others follow and like your game too

i think i good idea would be a tie breaker game and then goto post count

i think if you win a tie break via post count once that you should be flagged and in case their is another tie then you are not elligible to receive top prize unless all others in the tie have also received top prize once

this prevents a monopoly of the top prize

Well if you're the 1st one to pick a game and 50 people follow you, then what? I would rather see something by margin of cover if you're looking for a tiebreaker for next year.

1st tiebreaker margin of cover for the best (2 point) bets
2nd tiebreaker margin of cover for all 4 picks
3rd could be who posted picks 1st.

I like the post count idea - as the idea of the promotion also deals with the promotion of SBR... I think we'd all like to see more quality posts. If this promotion promotes it? Sweet - I'm all for it.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

But if you want to increase your chances, get to posting.

We all would love more input on games and any of the discussions going on. Along with some new fresh threads, if you can provide something.

I think the tiebreaker is fine the way it is, if it weren’t for the guys that have high posts you wouldn’t have a contest to play so they deserve the tiebreaker. You have all this people signing up to beat the prick (which is a great thing) that wont even come on this site after football season. The people that have been posting and come every week and give there analysis all year and just BS on the general board deserve the breaker.

There are quite a few posters that started off here only playing contests and have blossomed into excellent contributers to the site.

I thought the rule worked real well last year as the most simi-regular posters were able to collect almost everytime they the beat the prick and had a good showing on their totals...

Unfortunely, I think most weeks there are going to be multiply people going 4-0 so the people who are going to win the first prize multiply times are going to the "nice pick bro" and "give me props everytime I hit one on my daily 90 star pick" types... While the people who read here everyday but only post when they have something useful to add probably have zero chance at winning a weekly top prize... I think having a setup such as where you predict the final score of a certain game would have been a better tie breaker for the first place prize with post counts deciding who would get the last weekly spot and who would gets nothing...

But, whatever, I'll play by the rules and, personally, probably won't change my posting habits to chase a first prize... Obviously I don't run this site, so I guess, in this situation, my two cents have a little less EV then two cents anyhow ;-)

i totally agree with LVHerbie.. unlike a few posters here who love to make three-words replies in every topic which add nothing to the subject and now have a couple of thousands posts, there are other posters who have less posts but when they post have something to say which is actually relevant to the subject (and if they don't have anything to say, they don't say anything).

anyway, i don't know a thing about american football and fall asleep every year during superbowl, so I'm problably gonna let my girlfriend do the picks which names she likes best (go Bowling Green!!!), so I'm out of the running anyway, but in my opinion it would be more fair to think of another kind of tiebreaker next year.

Wow...didn't mean to open such a can of worms on the eve of the contest. Sorry guys. Now that I made a fuss I'm sure karma will get me and I'll finish dead last making my argument moot anyway.

After reading the posts though some people raised good points against the 'uniqueness' idea. Maybe for next year something along the lines of 'who picked the bigger dogs' or something to that effect.

Anyway...lets get on with the contest!!! Good luck to everyone.

Thanks Ill. That's actually an artist's rendering of me in 5 years after having lost my hair, shirt and shoes from sports betting.

In case of tie-break I would reward who posted it for first.

In fact all they know that, waiting for the last moment, lines change, playing on this fact.

Who mail for first is therefore disadvantaged

Sorry for my poor english
