Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Friday, 7/25/08

Starting Tuesday (July 1), we will start a new July Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $100 account at 5 Dimes, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 5 Dimes account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at 5 Dimes prior to making picks SIGN UP Here.

Before participating, players must PM their 5 Dimes account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.
*-EXCEPTION: If someone edits a post on the last day of the competition in an attempt to get an automatic loss in order to win the Last Place prize, then the original post will stand.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-leaders lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Minnesota

Minny is 6-3 vs Cleveland this season and handed Cliff Lee one of his two losses so far this year. Livan has not been solid on the road, but I am going to gamble that Minnesota can steal this game and with their god awful bullpen a comeback win is never out of the question. Add to it that Minny is 9-1 after a day off and 12-4 on Fridays plus Cleveland is 13-24 against divisional opponents.

Minnesota

Minnesota is due for a win after getting beat up by the Yankees this week. With a day off I predict a strong win an extra padding in my SBR bankroll. Good Luck!

TWINS + 185

This is more of a go against play here.
The Indians are only 13-26 against their divisional rivals this season.
Looking for ol' Lee to have an off day.
Come on Twins.

I am going to take my chances with this kid Johnson.

He has 2 starts and really has not pitched bad this year.

MARLINS +158: I know that Dempster has been great for the Cubs this year, but I remain a non-believer waiting for him to implode. After all, he has been a stiff his whole career and he is not exactly a youngster, so there is no sane reason for his abrupt turnaround this year. Besides, Johnson was a highly regarded prospect before needing Tommy John surgery, and he has looked good in his first two starts back, allowing three runs in five innings in his post-surgery debut and then improving in his second outing, allowing just two runs in 7.1 innings. He will only get better as he accumulates more innings.

Cleveland sweeped the Twins 4-0 last time, and Minnesota will be looking for revenge.

The Yankees are hot right now. Chamberlain is just as good as any other pitcher. Beckett has struggled of late and is a little worse at home. Expect the Yanks to get to him tonight.

Looking at the 2 teams from top to bottom I see an advantage to the Twins. The bats are due to heat up and Cliff Lee is due for a loss.

Rockies +129, The Rockies have been hitting well of late, they may win a high scoring game at the Great America BallPark. Reds are up and down, even with Volquez.

Lost a few SL wagers lately in the ninth inning...can't cap ninth in dingers. Today I'm going to go with Florida. Johnson gave up two runs in 6 2/3 innings against the Phillies last outing and the Tommy John surgery guy seems to be improving and Dempster has never started against Florida. I've got to hope Cubbies have an off day. Former Notre Dame Receiver Jeff Samardzija got called up today for Kerry Wood.

Giants riding high after the sweep of the mighty Nats. Upon inspection, have actually done better against Haren than I remember...Sanchez ok at home. Giants in a squeeker.

Minnesota seem to play good against good pitching. C Lee for Cleveland is on the mound and has an era around 2. I like this game being a low scoring game with Minnesota bats putting up runs late in the game to win.

The Dodgers aren't a run scoring machine which gives the Nationals a chance with Lannan on the mound.

Haren may be pitching well, but las time he faced the Giants toward the end of May they hit him pretty well and Sanchez didn't do all that bad vs. D'backs. 'Zona playing sluggishly for a team that should be wanting to extend their division lead.

Good luck everybody!

Nationals are due for a big win. What a better place than the friendly confines of the Dodger stadium where every team has a chance to win.
