Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Tuesday, 7/22/08

Starting Tuesday (July 1), we will start a new July Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $100 account at 5 Dimes, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 5 Dimes account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at 5 Dimes prior to making picks SIGN UP Here.

Before participating, players must PM their 5 Dimes account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.
*-EXCEPTION: If someone edits a post on the last day of the competition in an attempt to get an automatic loss in order to win the Last Place prize, then the original post will stand.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-leaders lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Seattle Mariners +147
Seattle is coming off a shutout facing a team in Boston that has been having some struggles on the road. When Papi returns to the lineup things will start to improve away from home but until then I see the Sox staying below .500 on the road. Varitek walked into one last night but I don't see that happening again tonight. My wild card for the Mariners is Jose Lopez.

Suppan is 17-5 against the money line vs division opponents over the last 2 seasons.

Brewers are 12-3 in their last 15 vs. a team with a winning record.

PHILLIES +156: Santana has actually been a very good fade for a couple of years now. Yes, he is still one of the best pitchers in baseball, but first the Twins and now the Mets have not supported him very well. New York is only 11-9 as a team in all of his starts this year, which has netted a loss since he is usually a heavy favorite like he is tonight. Joe Blanton is making his Phillies debut, and I feel he is much better than his numbers were in Oakland and that he could flourish facing National League lineups.

Kenny Rogers has struggled against the Royals this season. They hit lefties well and at home.

I won with them last night so will stick with them. They are playing better baseball then the White Sox so I think this is a very kind number.

The way the brewers are hitting right now, you can't bet against them.

Phillies +156, Mets have cooled lately. Santana is not as dominant in the NL.

Cleveland +168 - Indians have scored 53 runs in their previous 8 games. Hopefully they will continue in a winning vein of form tonight at decent odds.

Cleveland +168 I took Cleveland last night, going to stick with them again tonight. They seem to be clicking now that Sabathia is gone. They have been scoring in bunches. Keep it up tonight boys.

RANGERS + 163

I'm going with Texas here riding their current 2 game winning streak (vs) Chicago's current 3 game losing streak.
And these 3 losses all have occured @ home!
Also, the Rangers last night tied it's own season best mark of 4 games over .500

Taking a shot on Blanton is his phils debut, he is not as bad as his numbers.

The Phils have split the 2 games that Santana has started and both games were close. Phillies need at least 1 win in this series, so maybe it will come tonight.

Santana's pitch count will limit him to 5 maybe 6 innings. After that, the bullpen of the Mets will implode. Also looking for a quality debut from Blanton.

Sonnanstine coming off a terrible outing and hasn't pitched for 12 days. Ripe for the picking at a decent price.

Anytime Minnesota line up against a so so Right handed pitcher I'm taking The Twins. The Twins bats are stronger coming from the left and they do put many runs against the not so good lefties.

Why would I take the pathetic Royals? Well Rogers has been throwing salad and after the throttling KC took last night (19-4) someone in their clubhouse has got to scream and the effort. Davies is no Cy Young, but when a team gets railed hopefully pride takes over.

Have to take my boy Blanton here in his Phillies debut.

Blanton has 2 starts against the Mets and has not given up a single run in 15 innings.

Santana is 3-8 when favored by -125 to -175.

I believe Mendoza can hold White Sox to 3 runs tonight. This will be the key to Rangers victory again tonight. Rangers repeatedly proven that they can swing the bat.
