Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Monday, 7/21/08

Starting Tuesday (July 1), we will start a new July Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $100 account at 5 Dimes, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 5 Dimes account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at 5 Dimes prior to making picks SIGN UP Here.

Before participating, players must PM their 5 Dimes account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.
*-EXCEPTION: If someone edits a post on the last day of the competition in an attempt to get an automatic loss in order to win the Last Place prize, then the original post will stand.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-leaders lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Oakland A's +188
I look for the A's to end their 5 game skid tonight when they travel to Tampa Bay to face the Rays. Kazmir hasn't been sharp of late.... in his last 3 starts he has allowed 11runs in just 16 innings pitched.

DODGERS +114: Dodgers have some momentum after moving into first place tie with dramatic ninth inning comeback yesterday. Stults has been quite servicable, allowing three runs or less in four of his five starts. Kip Wells is making his first start for Colorado since being DLed with a blood clot in his pitching hand, and I've never been high on him anyway. Finally, the Dodgers are now second in the majors in bullpen ERA at 2.98.

Oakland Athletics +180

They can't be losing all games by one run. Tonight they beat Rays who are playing bad for the last 2 weeks.

Josh Banks is a pretty good pitcher. Homer Bailey blows. The Pads are due here.

Dodgers +114 This looks like the safest play on todays menu. They should be on an emotional high after yesterday. Torre wants to stay on top and will say the right things to get a big effort today.

Plus the Dodgers have an awesome road record lately: 7-2.

9:40PM (EST) 962 Arizona Diamondbacks +123

I think this is a pretty ridiculous price for who I consider to be the favourite. I'll be betting this value. Harden did well in his last outing, but the Cubs have no pen. We saw the comeback the Giants made AT WRIGLEY when he was taken out. Away from home, I don't see them winning.

Arizona +123, after the terrible series against the Dodgers the D Backs will turn it around during this series with the nervous Cubbies.

LA Dodgers +114

This one is simply taking the better team at plus money and it's not like it's Aaron Cook on the mound, it's Kip freaking Wells.

Texas

Vasquez is 2-1 in his career vs texas with a 6.5 era. Texas is no joke hitting wise and is kept in any game by their offense. Vasquez has not started in over two weeks and I look for him to be rusty in his first start. Hurley is a young kid with a nice arm and should keep them in the game. White Sox pen was used up yesterday for a bit and squandered a lead to the Royals at home.

In Blackburn's only start against the Yanks, he defeated them 5-1. The Twins are just playing better ball and the Yankee bats are still not impressing me.

Will continue to fade the Boston Red Sox as favorites on the road, until the cows come home, or the playoffs start, whichever comes first...

Pittsburgh,

Both pitchers are absolutely awful, taking the plus money for the win.

I'm not in the contest but just want to post this here:

Mariners +135

Washburn has given up two earned runs or less in six of his last seven starts, while Lester owns a road ERA of 3.92. The Red Sox are 3-11 against the Mariners in the last 14 games between these sides. Finally, in their last 19 road games, the Red Sox are 5-14.

Cleveland Indians +180 Indians have won the last 5 starts on Mondays that Byrd has pitched. Angels had a grueling series in which they had to come back 2 out of 3 games to beat Boston. I see them being a little tired physically and emotionally. Cleveland sneaks away with one here.

Going with Texas over Chicago Vazguez who is not having a good year with an ERA near 5 and the Rangers power hitters do well against righties

Vazquez is 2-1 in four career starts against the Rangers, despite posting a 6.29 ERA and hasn't won in over a month. Texas is just a young team that doesn't quit. Dye left yesterdays game with a knee issue, so hopefully he doesn't go which is a bonus.

dbacks +123 someone could be 13-1 ! if they took the opposite of my picks, thats what I do since I'm trying to take last

Johnson is 9-0 vs. the cubs and the Cubs are not as great on the road.

I seem to be missing LT. Here's my pick

LAD +114 Dodgers played very well against Arizona Rockies are 11 and 21 in the first game of a series. Seems too obvious so I'll lose here.

20Four7,

I trimmed the standings to display only the players that could still meet the 20-play minimum to be prize eligible. You were one play short of the nine plays needed with 11 days left. If you feel you DO have nine plays, let me know and I will double check.

I prefer Rangers bats versus Vazquez tonight. At the same time White Sox are struggling, 2-5 in last 7 games.
