Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Saturday, 7/19/08

Starting Tuesday (July 1), we will start a new July Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $100 account at 5 Dimes, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 5 Dimes account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at 5 Dimes prior to making picks SIGN UP Here.

Before participating, players must PM their 5 Dimes account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.
*-EXCEPTION: If someone edits a post on the last day of the competition in an attempt to get an automatic loss in order to win the Last Place prize, then the original post will stand.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-leaders lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

I believe that Friday was the first day in the history of this contest that no underdogs won on a day when I had at least 4 dogs listed!

The new standings only displays players that have had at least seven plays to this point, as there are 13 days left in the month.

SF +130 Sanchez is a good pitcher, while Milwaukee isn't nearly as good against a strike out type of pitcher. Also Milwaukee is not that great on the road.

Washington Nationals +180
The Nationals nearly stole one last night, I look for them to do just that today. Willie Harris was 2 for 4 against his former team last night, if he can set the table early I think the Nats have a chance for the win...Lannan is 1-1 in his career vs the Braves.

Padres

Wolf matches up well against the Cardinals lineup, should be a close game, and will take the + money.

PADRES +135: Wellemeyer has a 7.16 ERA and a brutal 1.71 WHIP in his last three starts, which does not exactly inspire confidence in a rather big favorite like this. He has now gone five consecutive starts without recording a Quality Start, so it appears he is revering to his normal level after he had an abnormally hot start to this season. Now Wolf has not been much better as of late, but at this price, it may be worth the risk that Wolf could turn in one of his occasional sparkling efforts. After all, he has allowed two earned runs or less in eight of his last 11 starts, but that gets lost in the fact that he has allowed six earned runs or more in two of his last three outings. The "good" Wolf would be good enough to pull the upset here. Finally, the Cardinals are batting a modest .256 at home vs. left-handed pitching this season as opposed to .281 vs. right-handers, which should also give Wolf a leg up.

Oakland Athletics +177

Teams have identical 51-45 records so this line is inflated with two rookie pitchers on the mound. A's will rebound today and hit Choba hard.

Anaheim

You can not go wrong when getting + money on a 12 win pitcher at home who has been fantastic this season. Saunders will keep Anaheim in the game and give them a chance to win. Plus I like their pen better for the latter stages of this low scoring affair.

Have to go with Wandy at home in this one.

Cubs are 4-10 last 14 road games.

Oakland Athletics +177 I am not sold on Joba being a starting pitcher. Until he proves me other wise, I will stick with the bigger and inflated line. Both of these teams have the same record also, so why such a big favorite.

954 San Francisco Giants +125

I'm one of those All-Star Game hangover kind of guy and Ben Sheets is another that may still be tired from the weeks activity. Most of the SF Giants were hanging out with the exception of Linecum who was in the hospital with the flu. After getting throttled by the Brewers yesterday it sets up nice for the Giants.

LA Dodgers +115

2 quality pitchers going, and two teams that can't hit. This ends up going to the late innings as a very tight ball game, thus take the plus money on the Dodgers.

Washington +198

Lannan in his only 2 starts against the Braves, done kind of a Dr Jekyl, Mr Hyde performance. In both starts he faced John Smoltz, in the most recent, giving the Braves nothing, shutting them out 6-0, but in his first meeting with them, he got bombed 2-10. Let's see if we can get Dr Jekyl to resurface today and shut Atlanta down.

I never thought Lannan was that terrible. Jurrjens has been good, but this Braves team is struggling. Without Yunel Escobar, Chipper Jones is the only good hitter. McCann has struggled and same with Teixeira.

I quite like the Nats at this price, they were pretty close yesterday, if they can get their hittin back up, they'll win this.

Los Angeles Angels +120 The Red Sox aren't a great road team to begin with, now they have them favored over a quality team and pitcher, I'll take the dog. (Please note: Fading my underdogs picks for July would have made you a millionaire several times over)

J. Saunders is one the best pitchers in AL, while Beckett is overrated. Boston 2-8 in last 10 on the road. Take home team.

Cause they are my favorite team and I need to make a pick so that I can make 20 picks to qualify. Plus Billingsly has been great lately. Dodgers win a very low scoring game.

Best value on the board. Colorado has the edge in terms of hitting and pitching however that edge does warrent this number. Good Luck!

will take almost 2 to 1 odds with pitcher who has given up over 3 runs in only 1 outing out of last 10 and then it was 4 runs.

Hoping the Pirates bust out tonight to avoid matching a season high streak of six consecutive road losses.
