Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Sunday, 7/06/08

Starting Tuesday (July 1), we will start a new July Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $100 account at 5 Dimes, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 5 Dimes account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at 5 Dimes prior to making picks SIGN UP Here.

Before participating, players must PM their 5 Dimes account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.
*-EXCEPTION: If someone edits a post on the last day of the competition in an attempt to get an automatic loss in order to win the Last Place prize, then the original post will stand.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-leaders lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

The deadline for entering plays in the contest and still being eligible for prizes is Saturday, July 12.

Pittsburgh Pirates +140 @ sportsbetting
I am considering wagering the Brewers ML so I figure if I lose that I may as well win my pick here. The Pirates were in a position to win yesterdays game, today I look for them to get the job done.

Minnesota Twinkies +103
Cleveland has lost 7 in a row and Borowski has been sent to the minors. Twinkies 8-2 last 10, winning 4 straight, and playing at home. Cliff Lee is the probable all-star starter, but I don't think he can complete shutout the Twins.

Washington Nationals +190

Volquez has been erratic in his last two starts and Balester had a promising debute. Nationals are due for a win.

PADRES + 141

These road warriors are going for the sweep against the D'Backs this afternnon.
San Diego is 4-2 straight up in their last 6 games against Arizona.
Whereas on the opposite side of the coin, the D'Backs are only 1-4 in their last 5 games played @ home.
This will be Josh Bank's first start against Arizona.
And Randy Johnson's record in his last 5 starts against the Padres, is only 2-3!

BLUE JAYS +113: The Jays took some money here as I got +121 in real life. Litsch has done a fine job in 12 starts for Toronto, going 8-4 with a very nice 3.69 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 102.1 innings. He has allowed exactly one earned run in each of his last two starts, and he has seven Quality Starts in his last 10 outings. He also posted a Quality Start in his only career start vs. the Angels last season, allowing two earned runs on six hits in 6.1 innings, and the Angels offense was much stronger then than it is right now. Garland is also have a fine year for the Halos, but his decent 3.99 ERA and bad 1.44 WHIP actually pale when compared to Litsch this season. Oddly, Garland actually has worse numbers here at home, where he is 2-4 with a generous 4.70 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. In actuality, that performance by Garland mirrors the Angels as a team, as they are a mediocre 25-20 here at home compared to an outstanding 27-15 on the road.

Mets +114
Oliver Perez has pitched well against teams with .500 or better records. He has yet to give up a run in two appearances against the Phils. The Mets have been hitting the ball well lately and expect them to continue this trend.

Rodriguez (Houston starter) is pitching well of late. On the season he has logged 64 1/3 innings with an era of 3.08 while the Atlanta starter has an era over 6 on the year.

Blue Jays + 113. Litcsch has been undervalued all year, and today is no exception. Going against Garland, the Jays have the matchup advantage in this one and are a small overlay, especially considering that they won last night and that the Angels are better on the road than at home.

Got to like Wandy here in a pitcher's mismatch.

Morton has lost his last 2 at home.
Morton has an ERA of 7.88 at home.

More of a play against Randy Johnson here , as he has lost his last 7 starts and has nothing left from what I see. Just hope the Padres bats can hit some today.

RedSox +150 Wakefield had been pretty good recently though he does have a poor record against the Yankees.

Yanks have a few injury problems which makes the line value IMO

My apologies, sir. I thought they would be an underdog because the ml was at a '+'.
Anyways, I'll go with the Houston Astros +119.
Wandy Rodriguez is 3.08 ERA and Charlie Morton is 6.16 ERA.
Braves are 11-17 vs left-handed pitchers, whereas they are .500 vs. righties.

Royals +196 All of the big dogs can't win everyday. Especially with so much money on TB, this is more value then anything. Arizona was a -210 dog the other day to San Diego and they lost 5-1, hopeing Royals don't get swept here.

Toronto +113

Jays bats woke up against one of the A.L's best pitchers last night. Though it doesn't happen often, when the bats get hot it usually runs for 3-4 games in a row. Litsch throws strikes, which is always good against teams that have trouble generating their own offense.

Red Sox are 5-2 in last 7 in this series. Even though Wakefield hasn't had much success against the yanks, I still feel he has far more experience in the big games then this kid Chamberlain.

The Dodgers are hot in the last week and the Giants have the worst home record in the league. Cain has not beaten the Dodgers in the last 1 1/2 years.

Stults is pitchimg for Dodgers and after his first lost to Houston he should be back on his winning way. In addition, Giants can't win 2 in a row against Dodgers.

Darrell74,

As it says in the rules, I only list underdogs that are greater than +110 at the time I post the lines. The Twins just missed qualifying, as they were exactly +110.

Royals +196 Too high of a price when the Rays cannot even come close to filling up their stadium, and teams usually are decent and avoiding sweeps.
