Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Friday, 7/04/08

Starting Tuesday (July 1), we will start a new July Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $100 account at 5 Dimes, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 5 Dimes account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at 5 Dimes prior to making picks SIGN UP Here.

Before participating, players must PM their 5 Dimes account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.
*-EXCEPTION: If someone edits a post on the last day of the competition in an attempt to get an automatic loss in order to win the Last Place prize, then the original post will stand.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-leaders lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

The deadline for entering plays in the contest and still being eligible for prizes is Saturday, July 12.

Things are heating up in this rivalry, Cubs are about to start their slump. Zambrano's first start coming off an injury, and lost 2 of his last 3 starts. Cardinals play better at home and have won Loopers last two starts while playing in American League ballparks. Go Cards!

If this game is not available I would like Pittsburgh +178 - going with the crazy trend of Team alternating wins and losses in his last 10 starts, lost last outing.

Thanks,

Washington Nationals +142

Bergmann's been pitching well enough as of late. In this, his first start versus the Machine, I'm hoping his club can generate some run support off of Arroyo, for whom things could be going better this season.

happy holiday and good luck everybody!

Cleveland Indians +119 @ 5Dimes...Byrd(3-9) vs Hernandez(8-5) I like P.Byrd in this spot. The line seems to be a little strange to me as well since Minnesota is 8-2 in the last 10 and Cleveland is 2-8 in the last 10. As we have seen with the Indians bullpen no lead is safe, however I'm feeling the Indians offense getting loose and posting double digits on the scoreboard for the win.

I want FLA but don't know if theyll be a big enough dog so....

WAS +142 (betjamaica)

Bergmann 1-5 but with a 3.48 ERA last seven starts, Arroyo is 7.08 in his last seven. The WAS lineup who's faced Arroyo has an OPS of .807, and Arroyo has an .914 OPS this year vs .776 for Bergmann. Teams also are hitting .316 against Arroyo. Everything points to WAS being a good value pick.

Houston +167 (current)

The Brave have lost 5 straight and they are this big of a favorite? The Stros send out Mohler who is having a good year pitching 63 2/3 innings with an era of 3.82 and in his last 3 starts he has really heated up: 18 1/3 innings with an era of 1.47. On the other side Hudson has been struggling of late. In his last 3 starts he has 16 1/3 innings with an era of 6.61.

You answered your own question. LOL. Your play didn't count because of no writeup.

Sorry Cabo, I know you are not around right now but Cards are not available for selection. They were +110 at time of my post, not GREATER than +110.

Scott Olsen is a much better pitcher than Greg Olsen, and should be able to handle a Colorado Team potentially without Helton and Taveras.

YANKEES +115: After I said last week that you won't get any value on the Yankees the rest of the year except when they play the Red Sox, I just can't pass them up as home dogs. Beckett is regaining his great form, but Yankee Stadium has never been one of his favorite stopping grounds since he wrapped up the World Series for the Florida Marlins here way back when. Beckett has a robust 6.55 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in his last four starts in the Bronx, covering 22 innings. Granted, Rasner has been brutal lately, but all of his bad starts have come on the road. Believe it or nit, he had a 2.08 ERA and an excellent 1.08 WHIP in four home starts. For comparative purposes, Beckett has a 3.19 ERA and 1.16 WHIP on the road. It may also help that Rasner has never faced Boston before.

Reynolds is 2-6 so far with the Rockies. They're on a 3 game win streak, but were pretty lucky yesterday, and I think their luck will end today.

After melting down yesterday I expect the Brewers to lose another one to resurgent Pirates. Sheets is only 7-8 in his career against Pirates and Gorzellany is 3-0 in his career against Brewers.

I took florida yesterday to win and they ended up losing a tough one after having the lead twice. Today I'll also picks them because they have the better pitcher on the mound. Olsen has a 3.47 ERA vs. reynolds 5.75.

Tough loss last night for the Fish, and their better than that. Olsen is the better of the pitchers going and I'm just not sold on the Rockies at this time. I see a rebound from last night

Arroyo 1.072 OPS against in June. Cincy 2.2 RPG last 5 home games against a righthander.

Texas +118

Two .500 teams battling, one with a pitcher who's finding ways to win, and the other with a pitcher who pitches well but seems to find ways not to win. I'll take the plus money in this one.

Pirates +185

Because I want to go 0-4. Actually I am pissed at the Brewers for choking for me yesterday so I will fade them today.

Houston Astros +168 - Just like when Moehler took out the Redsox when they were +165... They'll get the Braves here...

ASTROS (+) 168

In this battle of righties tonight, I'm going with Moehler.
He's 2-1 in his last three outings.
And all have been one run games.
Happy Holidays everyone!

I'm betting Oakland. Buehrle is living a charmed life this season, and Blanton is better than his record
