Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Thursday, 7/03/08

Starting Tuesday (July 1), we will start a new July Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $100 account at 5 Dimes, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 5 Dimes account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at 5 Dimes prior to making picks SIGN UP Here.

Before participating, players must PM their 5 Dimes account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.
*-EXCEPTION: If someone edits a post on the last day of the competition in an attempt to get an automatic loss in order to win the Last Place prize, then the original post will stand.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-leaders lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

If you have not participated in contests sponsored by 5 Dimes in the past, the deadline for submitting your 5 Dimes account number is 6:00pm ET on Thursday (TONIGHT!), July 3. The deadline for entering plays in the contest and still being eligible for prizes is Saturday, July 12.

Brewers +149

Parra right now is the hot pitcher for the brewers going 3 and 0 in his last few starts. Webb has gone 1 and 2 for his last 3. During that time Parra is a 1.42 ERA while webb is over 7.

Right now the brewers are 6 and 4 last 10 while arizona is 3 and 10.

Duchscherer is the best pitcher according to ERA. The White Sox are due for a loss.

strictlywinners,

No Action unless you add a post with analysis. Do NOT edit your original post, as that would be an automatic loss.

NATIONALS +143:I know I sad Lannan would come back to earth and I successfully faded him in his last start, but I think he could be good here at a nice price. The Reds have struggled vs. left-handers in recent years, and after showing some improvement this season, they have reverted to their old ways lately, batting just .212 vs. southpaws over the last 10 games. Lannan did face the Reds once last season, and he pitched well allowing two runs in 5.2 innings of a 7-2 Nationals victory. Now Cueto will be a stud in this league for years to come, and he is certainly in raging current form, but still, he is just 6-8 with a 4.68 ERA for the season. I'm not sure he is quite worthy yet of this much favoritism.

Astros +122 Astros are at home the last game of a 4 game series. Dodgers have won 2 of them and the Astros will even the 4 game series here during the day. The Astros seem to hit better during the day and I look for them to pull out this game and get some hits.

Seattle Mariners +124

This is a pick against Tigers. They can't produce enough runs without Cabrera and Ordonez in the lineup and Inge is missing too. Verlander lost his last trip to Seattle. Seattle won 7 out of 9 and are looking like the team to beat right now. I love home dogs that are playing well.

2:05PM (EST) 902 Houston Astros +122

This is such a tight game, 2 teams with similar records. Given that the Astro's are at home, I'll give them the slight edge, and at +122, the odds look good.

Oakland A's +114

Duchscherer a ridiculous .484 OPS against in June and was the better pitcher in 1-0 loss to Lincecum. A's hit Vazquez and as a rule have done well against right handers on the road.

This has been a back and forth series with Baltimore winning the last outing. I'm taking Davies with an era close to 3 against Olson who era is near 5.

Brewers +155.

Thought they should have been around +140, Parra has been hot and webb has been human lately. The D Backs bats are nothing to write home about either. +155 is just too good of a price to pass on.

Oakland has won 5 out the last 6 games in this series. Also in the last 6 series that Oakland has played, they won the opening game in all 6 of them.

Thu 7/3 911 Florida Marlins +113

The Marlins continue to get no respect and Colorado is just a bad team. The Rocks send out Mark Redman who carries an era of 7.84 on the year and in his last 3 games his era is 12.51. I'll take the Marlins here with their offense against Redman at this price.

Parra has been hot and dominated the Dbacks earlier this year. The Brewers are on a tear offensively and have been sizzling of late.

Brewers +155 : Will take the better of the two teams here, Brewers bats are stronger and they have the better pitcher of late. Webb is good but the line is too high IMO.

OAK +114

Justin Duchscherer vs Javier Vasquez is why Oakland is a solid pick. Duch has an ERA under 2, Vasquez is at 4.49. Also, the Oakland lineup has a OPS of .792 vs Vasquez while the CWS lineup has .536 vs Duch (yes I know Duch has never faced CWS). What's more, Vasquez has a 6.20 ERA his last 7 starts, Duch has 1.40, and Vasquez has given up better than a hit per inning pitched. I think OAK is a good value.

Aramis Ramirez and Reed Johnson might be back today. I think this will be a higher scoring game than normal for Lincecum, which favors the Cubs.

922 Seattle Mariners +124

After a long slump Seattle has been playing competitive ball lately. Their bullpen has been tough for opposition. Verlander has been improving as well and Detroit has superior lineup, but Safeco is not a power hitters park and Carlos Silva has been improving his game as well. If he can keep this one close, which is entirely possible, the Mariners would have the pitching edge late with their pen.

Kansas City:

Kansas City has good numbers against lefties, and Davies is solid. Good value.

I look for Kyle Davies to bounce back after a couple poor starts. I'm also anticipating a close match-up with the Orioles bullpen letting this one get away from them. David DeJesus is my wild card in this one, as he seems excited to be back in the lineup swinging a hot bat.
