Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Sunday, 5/18/08

Starting Thursday (May 1), we will start a new May Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $250 account at BetJamaica, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 BetJamaica account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at BetJamaica prior to making picks Sign up here

Before participating, players must PM their BetJamaica account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-lealers lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

I think they salvage the series here. Beckett struggled in his last start so who knows.

Pirates +153 The better offensive team right now and a pretty lopsided pitching matchup....Marquis has just been bad and Dumatrait has very respectable #''s so far.

Minn +136 Just because it's the only one of my picks that will fall within the underdog range. It also works out as a bull pen pick.

Robertson +115
Robertson only gave up two runs in his last start, so he may be improving. Randy Johnson is way past his prime. The Tigers also hit very well against lefties, since their lineup is primarily right-handed batters.

#929 NYM +139 : basically a play against the Yanks cause they can't hit lefties, even though the Mets can't hit righties. oh, and i hate the Yankees, except when i bet them.

NY Mets +

I like the Mets lefty batters against The Yankees Wang. The Yankees bats are not producing enough runs without A-Rod

LT if the Reds don't make it to the contest play list (as they're hovering right around the cut-off point for eligibility),
please use the following pick as my play:

Detroit Tigers +119

Surprised the number wasn't higher on D'backs, this is part Johnson fade and partly anticipation of a Tigers win nixing the last leg on a lot of afternoon parlays . . .

PIRATES +152: The Pirates are 9-3 in their last 12 games, and they get the call at this excellent price vs. the shaky Marquis, who is 1-3 with a poor 5.26 ERA and 1.73 WHIP for the season. In a year where Chicago is nine games over .500 at 26-17, they are just 3-4 in the games that Marquis has started. As if that is not bad enough, has is not getting any better, instead posting an ugly 7.88 ERA and a hideous 2.06 WHIP while going 0-3 in his last three starts. Pittsburgh starter Dumatrait has been serviceable in his three starts so far. The Bucs are 3-0 when he has taken the hill, and he is coming off of probably the best start of his brief career, as he allowed three runs on only four hits in six innings in an 8-4 win at St. Louis. Finallly, the Buccos must feel good about snapping a 10-game losing streak to the Cubs by beating Carlos Zambrano here yesterday.

The Detroit Tigers got a win that they needed in the worst way last night. We think they can get another against Randy Johnson, and the fact that they are underdogs in this setting gets us in play so go Detroit...

Better bullpen ERA record for Minny as well as the fact Minny has a better +\- run differential vs. lefties (0.30) than COL does against righties (-1.10).
MINNESOTA is 28-10 vs. the money line in inter-league games over the last 3 seasons.

Sun 5/18 901 Pittsburgh Pirates +152

Dumatrait (Pitt starter) has a much lower era than Marquis (Cub starter) and in their last 3 starts it is even more prominant.

Dumatrait: 15 2/3 innings; 4.02 era (last 3 starts)
Marquis: 16 innings; 7.88 era (last 3 starts)
