Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Thursday, 5/15/08

Starting Thursday (May 1), we will start a new May Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $250 account at BetJamaica, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 BetJamaica account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at BetJamaica prior to making picks Sign up here

Before participating, players must PM their BetJamaica account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-lealers lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Athletics +137

I look for the Athletics to avoid the sweep in Cleveland today. Both teams struggle against LHP, but the Athletics are the better day game team, both as far as hitting and starting pitching is concerned. It also definitely helps that the A's have the better bullpen.

Oakland + posted #:
Oakland is the slightly better hitting team and has the 2nd ranked bullpen in the game. Laffey has been lights out his last 2 games but I expect Oakland to get at least a few out of him while trying to avoid the sweep.

ATHLETICS +136: I am aware that Cleveland’s Aaron Laffey has not allowed an earned run in his last two starts, covering 14 innings, and that the Indians starting pitchers have now tossed an unbelievable 43.1 consecutive scoreless innings. However, all of that is built in to this inflated line, and as great as Laffey has been, this line gives too much respect to someone that has made just three starts this year. Besides, when Oakland’s Greg Smith allowed four runs at Texas in his last start, it snapped an impressive streak of six consecutive starts by Smith of allowing three earned runs or less to start the season. He is facing a Cleveland lineup here that is batting a pathetic .203 over the last 10 games, and Oakland has the far superior bullpen between these two teams, leading the American League with a bullpen ERA of 2.95. If the A’s could scratch out some runs vs. Laffey here, and that incredible scoreless streak by Cleveland starters has to end eventually, I'll take my chances with Smith and the Oakland pen at a nice price.

Im gonna join the consencus gere and take the A's (+136) as well. Good lineup compared to a cold Tribe lineup (WTF is up w/ Hafner he is killing my fantasy team!), great BP, and a tight pitching matchup. Book it.

Mets are vulnerable with Pelfrey on the mound. He's lost his last 3 with a 6.61 ERA.

While Chris Sampson's ERA has been less than stellar this year, his road era is a mere 3.24. Besides, how often do you get plus money on an offensive team like the Astros against arguably the worst team in baseball?

Have to take my A's here. I know Oakland does not hit lefties very well, but they are going to play hard to avoid the sweep. I also like the rookie Smith for the A's.

I'd pass on today's card, but I've had a few too many days of late with no action in here so my pick is...

959 Houston Astros +127

Sampson pitched a hell of a game in his last outing, and he's been good against the Giants in the past-- an ERA of 1.50 v Lincecum's 1.20 against the 'stros.

I look for this game to be lost by a bullpen-- and SF is in worse shape there, especially considering Houston's better offensive power.

Look for A's not to be swept 3-1 on Thurs., 9-5 on day games and top bull pen era

Cleve 12-16 after shut out and 5-8 day games

Don't feel that good about today's card either, Lincecum is good, but if sampson stays in there, stros can pull this one off in the long run

Tampa has walloped the Red Sox, stuck it to the Yanks on Tuesday night and they are playing considerably better than the Yankees can even dream about right now. And their ace Kazmir is on the mound for them today.

965 Colorado Rockies +148

The Rockies have dropped four straight games and have lost seven of the eight meetings this season but if there is a game that they can take, this is the one. Note that the one victory that Colorado has in this series this year was with Aaron Cook on the hill. Despite not scoring many runs of late, the potential is there for the Rockies as they have hit a solid .296 over their last 10 games.

While Hamels is great, James is not totally bad and Atlanta has at leat equal lineup. If Hamels is not 100% on, this might be much tighter than the odds suggest.

Rockies came close last night. I think there is a decent chance they can get this one. Cook has been awesome; he's a pitcher who could beat Webb. Looks worth a play, on a day when it's tough for me to find a dog I like much.

Rockies +148

Can Brandon Webb go 9-0? I think he gets a loss tonight no one can be perfect forever. Cook is 6-1 he is almost perfect this year. Both ERA'S are almost the same Cooks is a little better should be a good game. Colorado avoids the sweep tonight with Cook already getting a win against the Diamondbacks this yr lets make it 2.
