Default Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest - Wednesday, 5/14/08

Starting Thursday (May 1), we will start a new May Baseball Underdog of the Day Contest with a prize of $250 account at BetJamaica, 3 time roll-over. Last place will receive a $25 BetJamaica account with a 3 time roll over. If there is a tie for last place in both units and wins (20 plays minimum), there will be be multiple last place boobie prizes.

*IMPORTANT*
All players must have an account at BetJamaica prior to making picks Sign up here

Before participating, players must PM their BetJamaica account ID to SBRforum Staff

1. Check in the BASEBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Only the UNDERDOGS in games posted by LT will be eligible for selection, which will be only games that have underdog prices of greater than +110.

3. All plays will be RISKING one unit, and selections may NOT be changed once posted.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up! The write-up does not have to be long, just a sentence or two (or more) about why you are making your play.

5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis will be NO ACTION. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake, need to add analysis or wish to enter a corrected line, do so in a separate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not go off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not contest selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts, LT's notes to posters or congratulatory posts.

6. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
• One entry per home and computer.
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
• Maximum one underdog pick per day, minimum 20 underdog plays required to be eligible for monthly prize.
• Tiebreaker for first place is total WINS. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head underdog match until winner is determined. This would begin on the first day of next month with no passes allowed. If co-leader passes during tie-breaking period, he or she is eliminated, even if other co-lealers lose.
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Florida +131 or whatever they are

Florida has been undervalued all year. The reds are one of the worst teams in baseball. It is also a bull pen play from LT's system.

Florida Marlins / +130 current

5.7 rpg on the road, one of the better bullpens in terms of era, arroyos era is quite honestly tragic. Marlins one of the best teams in baseball, - that defense issue.

Fla (+130) Fla scoring a ton of runs including on the road, Arroyo not pitching well and the Reds just stink. Book it.

Blanton has been good in his last 3. Sabathia has struggled vs As.

ATHLETICS +140: The A's are the last team Sabathia wants to see when he is trying to turm his season around. This is because Cleveland is just 1-8 the last nine times he has started vs. Oakland, and the last time CC faced the A’s here in Cleveland, he was torched for nine earned runs and 12 hits in just 3.1 innings last season. Meanwhile, Oakland’s Joe Blanton has allowed exactly two earned runs in each of his last three starts, and the A’s lead the American League with a sparkling 2.97 bullpen ERA, making them a BPS play here.

As LT said, It's a BP play. Also, the +140 price is too good to pass up.

Number seems little high. Both teams 4-6 over last 10. De La Rosa got killed his first game giving up 9 runs and 3 BB in 4 innings. However he pitched much better he next outing. Look for him to continue to improve.

Wed 5/14 921 Oakland Athletics +140

Blanton (Oakland starter) is having a very good season logging 61 2/3 innings with an era of 3.82. His last 3 starts are even better, 19 2/3 innings with an era of 2.75. The Tribe might have trouble with him this evening as they are hitting only .160 in their last 3 games scoring a total of 7 runs in those 3 games.

C.C. Sabathia may be back on track a little bit, but that 1.68 WHIP is still pretty large with the Tribe this big a favorite. On the other side, Joe Blanton has a much better ERA, and a better WHIP, than Sabathia. Blanton beat Sabathia in Cleveland on April 11 (despite allowing 5 runs). And, to top it off, as LT points out, the A’s have the best bullpen ERA in the AL. I think the A’s pitching staff to keep them in this game, and I think the A’s to score some runs off both Sabathia and the Indians’ bullpen. The A's at +140 looks to me like a good value.

The Rays have been on a streak and I think it is about time to come to an end. The pitching matchup is pretty even and Yankees have all that money invested in players on the roster time they earn there paycheck!!

Claudio Vargas should not command this price. This is a guy that was released from the Brewers ans their starting rotation. The Nats should be able to get 5 or 6 out of him. As long as Redding can keep the Mets under 6, the Nats have a good chance of winning tonight.

Who cares that Micah Owings is pitching? Who cares that the D'Backs are great at home while the Rockies suck wind on the road? De La Rosa has looked good in the 4 games he has played the D'Backs in. Owings has been kind of roughed up in his last 3 games.

Owings is slightly overrated and Colorado can compete with the bats in this one. Diamondbacks haven't seen De La Rosa in some time. Some Value on the Rocks here a nice sized road dog.

A's + 140

Got burned last night by going against one of my home town teams (Giants)!
So tonight I'm going with their cross town rivals.
Blanton looks tough against the Tribe.
As for Sabathia, (even though he's hails from Vallejo, an East Bay suburb), this is an off year for him.
Great value here.
Bet on this one too, in real life!
